Spring had returned to the suburbs, washing away the lingering chill of winter with warm sunlight and blooming dogwood trees.
Emily stood on the wide, sunlit porch of a brand-new home overlooking the blue expanse of the Pacific coastline—far away from the quiet, suffocating suburban street where her nightmare had once begun. The property had been purchased using the seized assets of Marcus’s liquidated company, transferred entirely into her name through a court-ordered restitution settlement that stripped her former husband of every single cent he had ever schemed to steal.
She wore a soft, flowing cotton dress, the fabric brushing gently against skin that had healed remarkably well under the care of top-tier specialists.
The front gate clicked open. A tall, distinguished-looking man walked up the stone pathway, carrying a small, wicker basket filled with fresh wildflowers and organic baby supplies. It was Arthur Vance—the quiet neighbor who had saved her life, now a cherished family friend who visited every Sunday afternoon.
“Afternoon, Emily,” Arthur smiled, tipping his sun hat as he climbed the porch steps.
“Afternoon, Arthur. Come on in,” Emily replied warmly, her voice carrying a light, musical quality that had been absent for years.
From inside the bright, airy living room came the soft, contented gurgle of a baby. Emily walked inside, scooping her daughter Grace into her arms. The little girl had bright, curious eyes and a head of soft dark curls, laughing as she reached out to tug playfully at her mother’s silver necklace.
