Chapter 4 - The House of CardsThe heavy oak door slammed shut behind Victor as he locked it from the outside, throwing the deadbolt with a resounding metallic click.

"Hand it over, Lauren," Ethan demanded, stepping toward her with his hands raised defensively, his expression a desperate mix of anger and pleading. "Don't be stupid. You can't fight us on this. If you just cooperate, we can sweep this under the rug. We'll get a divorce, I'll give you a settlement, and you can walk away."

"A settlement?" Lauren laughed, a sharp, cynical sound that cut through the tense air like broken glass. "Ethan, you're looking at federal prison time for conspiracy, corporate fraud, and attempted poisoning. A divorce settlement isn't going to cover your legal fees when the Department of Justice gets a copy of this audio file."

Richard held up a hand, silencing his son with a single, imperious gesture. He walked slowly toward the bed, studying Lauren with a chilling mixture of professional respect and chilling malice.

"You are remarkably clever, my dear," Richard said smoothly, stopping three feet away from her. "I misjudged you. I thought you were just another compliant corporate drone who cared more about a comfortable lifestyle than professional ethics. But you need to understand the realities of the world we operate in."

"What reality is that, Richard? The one where you drug your own daughter-in-law to embezzle municipal funds?" Lauren retorted sharply.

"The reality where power dictates truth," Richard replied, his voice dropping into a low, menacing register. "You think you're holding a winning hand with that little plastic recorder in your hand. But let me explain what will happen if you try to leave this room with it."

Richard leaned in slightly, his eyes cold as winter ice.

"If you don't sign those compliance documents tonight, and if that audio file somehow surfaces, my legal team will systematically dismantle your entire professional reputation. We will file counter-suits claiming you embezzled the funds yourself, forged corporate audit reports under duress, and suffered a severe psychotic break resulting in paranoid hallucinations. Your license will be revoked, your name will be dragged through the mud, and you will never work in finance again."

Lauren stared at him, her chest rising and falling rapidly. For a second, the sheer magnitude of their institutional power pressed down on her like an anvil. They had wealth, connections, judges in their pockets, and decades of entrenched influence across the Pacific Northwest.

Against an empire like that, what chance did a single auditor from Seattle really have?

"You think your money and your lawyers can protect you from everything," Lauren whispered, her voice steadying as a sudden, brilliant realization washed over her mind.

Richard raised an eyebrow. "Can they not?"

"You forgot one crucial detail about my job, Richard," Lauren said, a calm, terrifying smile spreading across her lips. "I don't just audit the local shell companies. As the senior compliance auditor for the Pacific Northwest financial group, I oversee the automated, encrypted secondary ledger backups that mirror every single municipal transaction directly to federal regulatory archives in Washington, D.C."

The color drained entirely from Richard’s face. The polished, untouchable mask of the real estate tycoon cracked instantly.

"What... what did you say?" Richard choked out, his voice losing its smooth composure.

"Every fraudulent document you forced me to look at over the last four months," Lauren said, stepping away from the window with deliberate, unhurried grace, "was automatically cross-referenced by my secure terminal and uploaded to an automated cloud server timed to release an encrypted forensic data package to the SEC and the FBI every Monday morning at 8:00 AM if my biometric login isn't manually verified in the downtown office."

She glanced down at her watch.

"Today is Saturday night, Richard. In less than thirty-six hours, that automated packet drops into federal hands whether I'm alive, dead, or locked in this guest room."
