Chapter 5 - The Tables TurnThe silence in the room became absolute, suffocating, and heavy with impending doom.

Ethan staggered backward, grabbing the edge of the mahogany dresser to keep from falling. His face turned the color of ash, his eyes wide with stark, unadulterated terror. "Dad... she set a dead-man’s switch. She set a federal data trigger!"

Richard didn't answer. His chest heaved violently as he stared at Lauren, the veins in his temples throbbing with unbridled rage and helpless panic. The brilliant, infallible master plan he had spent two years orchestrating had just been systematically dismantled by a woman he had underestimated as a weak, easily manipulated outsider.

"You're lying," Richard whispered, his voice trembling with denial. "You're bluffing to save your skin."

"Am I?" Lauren asked calmly, pulling her phone from her pocket and tapping the screen. Even without a local cellular signal, the device’s local secure client flashed a green indicator light confirming network synchronization status. "Check your corporate terminal access logs on your iPad right now, Richard. See if the encrypted audit backup service hasn't already flagged your personal trust accounts for suspicious activity."

Victor frantically pulled an iPad from his coat pocket, his fingers shaking so badly he dropped it onto the rug before scooping it back up. He tapped the screen repeatedly, pulling up the master firewall portal for Mercer Holdings.

Within five seconds, Victor’s face went completely white.

"Boss..." Victor gasped, his voice cracking. "Look at the system warning... the SEC compliance node has initiated a Tier-4 forensic freeze on all subsidiary accounts. They're locking down the waterfront development assets right now."

Richard lunged forward with a furious roar, his hand clawing toward Lauren as if he wanted to physically strangle her, but before he could cross the room, the heavy oak door behind him burst open with a deafening crash.

Three armed security officers in tactical gear—accompanied by two local police detectives holding drawn badges—poured into the guest bedroom, their weapons leveled directly at Richard, Ethan, and Victor.

"Federal marshals and Seattle Police Department! Nobody move!" the lead detective commanded, his voice booming through the room. "Richard Mercer, Ethan Mercer, you are under arrest for conspiracy, corporate wire fraud, and attempted poisoning!"

Ethan collapsed onto his knees, burying his face in his hands as handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists.

Richard stood frozen, his arms half-raised, glaring at Lauren with eyes full of venomous hatred as the heavy steel cuffs were snapped onto his own wrists. As officers dragged him toward the hallway, he spat out a final, bitter warning.

"You think you've won, Lauren? My lawyers will tear you apart in court. You'll spend the rest of your life fighting my estate!"

"Not from a federal penitentiary, Richard," Lauren replied coldly, slipping her voice recorder back into her handbag and snapping the clasp shut. "Enjoy your new cell."
