Chapter 4 - The House of GlassThe following hours were a blur of state police, lawyers, and the sudden, violent collapse of Eleanor Price’s empire. Judge Conrad Price was summoned to the estate, not as a guest, but as a person of interest in a criminal investigation.

I sat in the kitchen, watching the lights of the estate’s grounds turn into a labyrinth of police cruisers. Mrs. Dallow approached me, her face pale. "Tessa, I... I had no idea."

"You were just doing your job, Mrs. Dallow," I said. "But in the future, maybe don't assume the person who works for you is the one to blame."

Adrien found me there an hour later. He looked like a man who had aged ten years in sixty minutes. "My mother," he said. "The police found the evidence in the east tower. You were right. It wasn't an accident. Eleanor’s father had been blackmailing her for years. She was going to kill me too, wasn't she?"

"Once she became your medical proxy," I confirmed. "She didn't need the marriage. She needed the legal power to bury the secrets."

"Your father," Adrien said, his voice thick. "He died in poverty. He spent his life trying to clear his name while I was the one who ignored him."

"He knew the truth," I said. "That’s all that mattered to him."
