Chapter 5 - The Unraveling

The opportunity to test Walter’s warning arrived on a suffocating Friday evening, exactly one week before the grand wedding ceremony scheduled on the estate grounds.

An enormous marquee tent had been erected on the back lawn, decorated with thousands of white silk drapes, crystal chandeliers, and imported floral arrangements. Three hundred of the most elite guests from Charleston, Atlanta, and New York were expected to arrive for the rehearsal dinner.

Inside the mansion, the tension was palpable. Victoria had been snapping at the wedding planners, the caterers, and the domestic staff since dawn. She demanded that Maya steam her rehearsal gown for the third time, claiming she smelled faint hints of lavender from the laundry room.

Maya carried the delicate silk gown upstairs, her arms aching from fatigue. As she approached the private master suite in the western wing, she noticed the heavy oak door was slightly ajar. Inside, she could hear Victoria speaking in a harsh, hurried whisper on her cell phone.

"I'm telling you, Arthur, the pre-nup is airtight in my favor the moment the ceremony concludes," Victoria hissed into the phone, her voice entirely devoid of the soft, breathy cadence she used around Nathaniel. "Once we’re married, I control the trust disbursement, and we can quietly liquidate those coastal properties to cover your debts... Yes, I know Nathaniel is suspicious of the restructuring, but he’s blinded by guilt over my 'accident.' He'll sign anything to keep me happy."

Maya froze in the hallway, the dress bag clutched tightly in her hands. Arthur? Debts? The entire marriage was an engineered financial hostile takeover.

Suddenly, a heavy hand gripped Maya’s shoulder.

She gasped, spinning around.

Marcus Vance, Nathaniel’s chief corporate counsel and longtime legal advisor, stood behind her. His expression was grim, holding a thick manila folder under his arm. He had clearly heard every word coming through the cracked door.

"You shouldn't be listening to that, Maya," Marcus said quietly, though his eyes flashed with cold realization.

"Mr. Vance," Maya stammered, her heart racing. "She's... she's planning to—"

Before Maya could finish, the door to the suite swung open wide. Victoria stood in the doorway, her phone clutched in her hand, her face contorted in absolute fury. She wasn't sitting in her wheelchair. She was standing upright on her own two feet, leaning against the doorframe.

For three seconds, time stopped.

Victoria stared at Marcus, then at Maya, her eyes widening in horror as she realized she had been caught red-handed.

"Marcus... Maya..." Victoria began, her voice frantically shifting back into its trembling, high-pitched plea. "I can explain! My legs... I just felt a sudden spasm, I was trying to stand up to reach the medicine cabinet—"

"Save it, Victoria," Marcus interrupted coldly, holding up the manila folder. "I’ve spent the last forty-eight hours auditing the medical credentials of the doctor who certified your paralysis. He lost his license in three states five years ago, and his clinic in Zurich is a mailbox attached to a shell corporation funded by your brother."

Victoria’s color drained entirely. The pathetic act dissolved, leaving only a hard, desperate fury. "You can't prove anything! Nathaniel loves me! He'll believe me over a hired maid and a corporate lawyer any day of the week!"

"He might have," Marcus replied smoothly, turning toward the stairs where heavy footsteps echoed up the corridor. "If you hadn't chosen tonight to scream your confession through an open door while he was walking up the back stairs."

Victoria spun around.

Nathaniel stood at the top of the stairs.

His face was a mask of cold, unyielding stone. He had heard every single word.

"Nate..." Victoria whispered, her voice finally breaking, truly trembling this time. "Nate, please—"

"Get out," Nathaniel said.

It wasn't a shout. It was a flat, lethal decree that echoed through the entire western wing.

Before Victoria could answer, a loud, terrifying crack echoed from the garden below.

One of the halogen lighting rigs in the rehearsal tent had short-circuited, sending a shower of sparks directly onto the dry silk drapes. Within seconds, a wall of fire erupted up the side of the tent, setting off the emergency alarms and sending the staff into instant panic.

"Fire!" someone screamed from below.

Panic exploded through the mansion. Smoke began billowing up the stairwells, thick and gray.

May you like

Victoria, realizing her world had completely collapsed, panicked. Blinded by rage and desperation, she lunged past Nathaniel toward the stairs, screaming for help.

And that is when the chaos outside collided with the terror inside, leading straight to the blazing garden tent where the wheelchair would finally tip, and the lie would finally end.
