Chapter 6 - The Fire and the Truth

The smoke from the burning tent grew thicker, casting an eerie, flickering orange light across the panic-stricken grounds of the Cole estate. Guests screamed and scattered across the lawn, overturning champagne towers and shattering crystal glasses as security guards rushed to herd everyone toward the safety of the front gates.
Inside the smoky garden perimeter, Victoria bolted away from the burning structure, her silver rehearsal gown sweeping across the grass.
Maya, who had followed the panicked crowd outside, caught sight of Victoria frantically wheeling her empty silver chair—which someone had pushed outside during the initial evacuation—attempting to maintain her tragic victim persona even as flames consumed the tent behind her.
"Push me faster, you useless girl!" Victoria shrieked, spotting Maya through the smoke and thrusting herself toward her, trying to force Maya to push a wheelchair she didn't need.
Driven by months of accumulated humiliation, exhaustion, and righteous fury, Maya gripped the handles of the silver wheelchair and shoved with everything she had.
The front wheel struck a broken table leg buried in the grass.
The chair pitched forward.
Victoria flew out of it.
And she did not fall.
She landed firmly on both feet, lifted the hem of her silver gown, and ran. Three fast, perfect steps carried her away from the flames before she froze beneath a chandelier hanging from an ancient oak tree, realizing in absolute horror that the entire estate was watching.
The garden fell dead silent, save for the crackling of the fire.
Nathaniel Cole stood ten feet away, his face drained of color as he stared at the woman he had cared for, protected, and loved with unwavering devotion for two years.
"Victoria," he whispered into the quiet night. "You're standing."
Victoria’s diamond earrings trembled. Behind her, Maya still held the overturned wheelchair. But the truth was out, naked and unshielded by lies or medical files.
Marcus Vance stepped forward beside Nathaniel, opening the manila folder and handing him the certified audit of Victoria’s fraudulent medical history, alongside transcripts of her phone calls with her brother regarding the financial takeover.
Nathaniel didn't even look at the folder. His dark, piercing eyes remained fixed on Victoria. The grief in his expression slowly hardened into an unbreakable resolve.
"The wedding is off," Nathaniel said, his voice carrying clearly across the silent lawn. "And by morning, my legal team will ensure you and your family face federal charges for fraud, extortion, and identity manipulation."
Victoria opened her mouth, but no sound came out. She turned and fled into the darkness, her expensive silver gown dragging through the dirt as she disappeared through the estate gates for the final time.
The fire sirens wailed in the distance, drawing closer as the local fire department arrived to douse the remaining flames. Slowly, the guests began to disperse, whispering in awe and disbelief as the true drama of the evening settled over Charleston.
Nathaniel stood alone in the center of the lawn for a long moment. Then, he turned around and walked slowly toward Maya, who stood quietly beside the empty wheelchair.
"Are you alright, Maya?" he asked, his voice softening with deep, genuine humility.
"Yes, Mr. Cole," Maya replied, holding her head high.
Nathaniel reached into his suit jacket, pulled out a gold-plated pen, and wrote something on the back of his business card, pressing it gently into her hand.

"You've earned a permanent place at Cole Harbor Properties, on whatever terms you choose," Nathaniel said quietly. "And as for your family in Savannah... consider all their medical bills, mortgages, and tuition fully covered, starting tonight."
Maya looked down at the card, then up at the billionaire whose empire had nearly been stolen by a lie. A quiet, radiant smile broke across her face. The heavy weight of survival that had bowed her shoulders for nine months finally lifted, dissolved by the simple, enduring power of the truth.
