Chapter 5 - The Sabotage at Substation 9

The news of Gerald Ashworth’s arrest sent shockwaves through Halloway City. By morning, Brightline Power’s board of directors had collapsed, federal prosecutors were dismantling the Moretti syndicate's financial shell companies, and Caleb Marsh’s name was officially cleared in every newspaper across the state, accompanied by a multi-million-dollar posthumous settlement awarded to his estate.
Dileia stood in the quiet graveyard on the outskirts of the city, the afternoon sun shining softly through the autumn trees.
She wore a simple dark coat, holding a bouquet of fresh yellow roses—Caleb’s favorite. Posie stood beside her, holding Rodrik’s hand, quietly chattering about the squirrels near the stone pathway.
Dileia knelt by Caleb’s headstone, setting the flowers down gently against the polished granite.
"We did it, Caleb," she whispered softly, wiping a quiet tear from her eye. "The truth is out. You're free. And Posie is safe."
A heavy, warm hand settled gently on her shoulder.
She looked up to see Rodrik standing above her, his eyes filled with a quiet, profound respect. He didn't speak; he simply offered her his hand, helping her up from the grass.
"Thank you," Dileia said softly, looking at him.
"You owe me no thanks, Dileia," Rodrik said smoothly. "You brought down a empire of corruption with your own courage. I merely provided the escort."
Before Dileia could answer, Marcus came running down the stone path from the parked SUVs, his phone pressed frantically to his ear.
"Boss!" Marcus called out, his face pale. "We have a critical situation! Moretti’s remaining lieutenants... they know the federal trial will destroy their entire regional network. They just initiated a manual override at Substation 9!"
Dileia’s technical brain kicked into high gear instantly. "Substation 9? That’s the central switching hub for the entire harbor district and the hospital precinct!"
"They locked the technicians in the control room and set the main transformers to cascading thermal overload," Marcus reported breathlessly. "In fifteen minutes, the entire harbor grid will explode. It will take out the power to Halloway General Hospital—including the ICU where your grandmother is recovering, Boss!"
Rodrik’s face darkened instantly into terrifying stone. "Where is the tactical team?"
"Ten minutes away, but the roads are jammed because the traffic lights are already failing!"
Dileia grabbed Rodrik’s arm, her dark eyes flashing with fierce determination. "I know Substation 9! I worked the retrofits on those switching banks three years ago! If they set a manual thermal overload, the digital overrides won't work—someone has to manually pull the primary vacuum breakers from inside the high-voltage vault!"
"No," Rodrik said instantly, turning to her, his grip tightening on her shoulders. "It's too dangerous. The vault will be filled with ozone and high-voltage arcs."
"Rodrik, your grandmother is on life support at Halloway General!" Dileia shouted, looking directly into his eyes with unshakeable resolve. "If those transformers blow, the backup generators won't kick in before the oxygen systems fail! I am an electrician! I know how to cut that grid without killing myself!"
Rodrik looked at her—at her fierce, beautiful, unyielding face—and realized that trying to stop her would be like trying to stop the sunrise.
"Marcus!" Rodrik roared. "Get the SUV! We have six minutes!"
Substation 9 looked like a scene from an apocalyptic nightmare.
Thick black smoke curled from the cooling towers of the massive industrial complex. Sparks flew fifty feet into the air as the massive oil-filled transformers groaned under critical thermal pressure. The hum of the dying grid was a deafening, bone-rattling roar that vibrated through the pavement.
Rodrik’s SUV crashed through the perimeter chain-link fence, coming to a halt twenty yards from the main vault doors.
Three Moretti syndicate gunmen guarding the entrance raised their weapons, but Rodrik and Marcus didn't even slow down. Rodrik fired three precise shots through the windshield before his boots even hit the dirt, clearing the entrance in seconds.
"Stay behind me!" Rodrik ordered as they burst through the heavy steel doors into the blinding, smoke-filled interior.
The vault was a terrifying maze of roaring hums, flashing red emergency lights, and arcing blue electricity. The air tasted of pure copper and burning rubber.
"The primary breaker panel is on the upper gantry!" Dileia yelled over the deafening noise, pointing toward an iron catwalk suspended twenty feet above the glowing transformers.
A sudden burst of gunfire echoed through the vault!
A bullet ricocheted off the iron railing right above Dileia’s head.
"Go!" Rodrik roared, stepping in front of her, returning fire toward a rival gunman perched on the far crane platform. "I'll cover the gantry! Pull those breakers, Dileia!"
Dileia didn't hesitate. She grabbed a pair of heavy rubberized high-voltage gloves from an emergency box on the wall, threw on a protective face shield, and sprinted up the iron stairs.
Bullets whined through the air around her, but Rodrik’s dark figure stood at the base of the stairs like an invincible shield, his heavy pistol barking in rapid, lethal rhythm, dropping every threat before it could get close to her ladder.
Dileia reached the main breaker panel. The digital temperature readouts were screaming in bright red numbers: 980°C... 995°C... CRITICAL FAILURE IMMINENT.
"Come on, come on!" Dileia growled.
The master lever was locked in the "ENGAGED" position by a steel security bar the sabotage crew had welded shut.
Dileia grabbed a heavy iron grounding rod hanging from the rack. She wedged the rod beneath the crude weld, set her boots against the steel frame, and pulled with every ounce of strength in her body.
Her muscles screamed. The wounds on her palms burned beneath her gloves.
BANG!
A bullet struck the panel six inches from her face, shattering the glass digital display.
Down below, Rodrik dropped the last gunman, but a heavy iron pipe, dislodged by an electrical explosion, fell from the ceiling, striking Rodrik across his shoulder and chest, forcing him down to one knee on the concrete floor.
"RODRIK!" Dileia screamed.
Rodrik looked up through the smoke, his face covered in soot and sweat, his dark eyes locking onto hers with savage, desperate love.
"PULL IT, DILEIA!" he roared. "PULL IT FOR US!"
Dileia let out a primal, fierce cry of raw determination. She threw her entire body weight backward against the iron rod.
CRACK!
The crude weld snapped!
Dileia grabbed the massive master vacuum lever with both hands and slammed it downward with all her might!
BOOM!
A blinding flash of white light illuminated the entire vault as the primary circuit opened. The deafening, bone-rattling hum of the transformers died instantly. The arcing sparks vanished. The roaring heat began to dissipate into the quiet, cooling air.
Across Halloway City, the harbor grid safely isolated, and at Halloway General Hospital, the emergency lights flickered once, then stabilized into smooth, uninterrupted green power.
On the high gantry, Dileia dropped the iron rod, her chest heaving, her hands trembling as she pulled off her face shield.
She looked down.
Rodrik stood at the base of the gantry, looking up at her through the clearing smoke. He looked battered, soot-stained, and exhausted—but as he looked at her, standing victorious against the dying sparks of the grid, his face softened into an expression of pure, unadulterated reverence.
He didn't say a word. He simply opened his arms.
Dileia ran down the iron stairs, flying down the final steps, and threw herself completely into his embrace.
Rodrik caught her, lifting her off the ground, wrapping his massive arms around her waist, burying his face in her neck as he held her tight against his beating heart.
"You saved us," Rodrik whispered, his voice trembling with an emotion he had locked away for a lifetime. "You saved us all, my brave girl."
Dileia pulled back, her hands cupping his soot-stained cheeks, looking deep into his dark, magnificent eyes.

"I didn't save us because of the grid, Rodrik," she whispered, her heart soaring higher than the clouds. "I saved us because I can't live in a world where you aren't in it."
Rodrik let out a low, breathtaking laugh and pulled her into a deep, passionate, electric kiss that made the entire world vanish into pure, golden light.
