Chapter 6 - A Citadel of Hearts

Six months later.

The spring sun shone down brilliantly over the lush green gardens of the Vance estate. The blue waters of the harbor below sparkled like scattered diamonds under a clear, cloudless sky.

The grand terrace was decorated with white silk drapes, blooming white roses, and golden ribbons. A seventy-piece orchestra played a sweet, triumphant symphony as two hundred guests—city officials, high-ranking officers, hospital staff, and everyday workers from the power utility—sat in gilded white chairs on the lawn.

At the front of the altar stood Rodrik Vance.

He looked impossibly handsome in a dark charcoal tailored tuxedo, a white orchid pinned to his lapel. His dark hair was neatly styled, his posture commanding, but his eyes were fixed entirely on the archway at the top of the terrace stairs.

Standing beside him as his best man was Marcus, wearing a sharp suit and a proud grin.

Sitting in the front row, wrapped in a regal blue silk gown, was Margaret Vance, holding five-year-old Posie on her lap. Posie wore a fluffy yellow dress, a flower crown of white daisies resting on her dark curls, clutching Barnaby the rabbit, who now wore a tiny silk bowtie matching Rodrik’s.

The music shifted into a magnificent, swelling bridal march.

The crowd stood up in unison.

Dileia walked out onto the terrace.

She was a vision of breathtaking, radiant beauty. Her dress was a custom masterpiece of ivory satin and delicate French lace, flowing smoothly around her slender form, trailing gracefully behind her on the flower-strewn stone path. Her rich hair was styled in soft, cascading waves, held in place by a diamond tiara gifted to her by Margaret Vance.

She didn't look like a poor widow walking through shadows. She looked like a queen stepping onto her throne.

In her hands, she carried a bouquet of yellow roses mixed with white lilies. But as she walked down the aisle, her gaze never left the man waiting for her at the end.

When she reached the altar, Rodrik stepped down to take her hand. His long, calloused fingers wrapped around hers with a gentle, fierce warmth that made her soul hum with absolute peace.

"You are my miracle, Dileia," Rodrik whispered, his voice thick with raw, beautiful emotion, his dark eyes shining with tears.

"And you are my home, Rodrik," Dileia whispered back, her smile radiant enough to eclipse the sun.

The priest stepped forward, his voice echoing warmly over the peaceful gardens.

"We are gathered here today to unite two souls who were brought together not by chance, but by courage, sacrifice, and an unyielding commitment to truth," the priest proclaimed.

The exchange of vows was simple, spoken from the deepest depths of two hearts that had survived the storm to find their harbor.

"I, Rodrik Vance, take you, Dileia Marsh, to be my wedded wife," Rodrik said, sliding a brilliant, flawless emerald-cut diamond ring onto her finger. "I promise to honor you, to stand as your shield, to respect your fierce independence, and to love you and your daughter with every beat of my heart, for as long as I live."

"I, Dileia Marsh, take you, Rodrik Vance, to be my wedded husband," Dileia said, sliding a polished platinum band onto his finger, tears of pure joy glittering on her lashes. "I promise to walk beside you, to love you without fear, to build a home of laughter and peace with you, and to give you my heart, forever."

"By the power vested in me," the priest smiled broadly, "I now pronounce you husband and wife! Rodrik, you may kiss your bride!"

Rodrik didn't wait a second. He pulled Dileia into his broad chest, his hand cupping the back of her neck as he dipped her gently, pressing his lips to hers in a deep, passionate, breathtaking kiss that sent the entire crowd into thunderous, standing applause.

Posie cheered loudly from the front row, throwing a handful of yellow rose petals high into the spring air.

Later that evening, as the stars bloomed across the dark velvet sky over Halloway City, the terrace was illuminated by hundreds of soft, warm fairy lights.

Music drifted across the lawn as guests danced, laughed, and drank champagne.

At the far edge of the stone balcony, looking out over the glowing city lights below, stood Rodrik and Dileia.

Rodrik stood behind her, his large, warm arms wrapped securely around her waist, his chin resting comfortably atop her dark hair. Dileia leaned back against his chest, holding a glass of sparkling cider, her wedding ring catching the ambient glow of the garden lights.

Down on the lawn below, Margaret Vance was sitting in a comfortable lounge chair, teaching Posie how to use a brass telescope to look at the moon, both of them giggling happily.

"Brightline Power was officially restructured today," Dileia murmured softly, leaning her head back against his shoulder. "The city council appointed a new independent safety board. Every lineman in the state is getting updated safety gear and fair wages starting next month."

Rodrik let out a low, warm laugh against her hair. "Even on your wedding night, my love, you are fixing the world's power grid."

Dileia turned in his arms, wrapping her hands around his neck, looking up into his dark, handsome face with endless affection.

"I don't need to fix the whole world anymore, Rodrik," she whispered softly, her fingers tracing the sharp line of his jaw. "Just our world."

Rodrik looked down at her—at the brave, beautiful electrician who had run through fire to save his family, and ended up saving his soul.

He leaned down, pressing a tender, lingering kiss against her soft lips.

"Our world is eternal, Mrs. Vance," Rodrik murmured against her skin, pulling her close as the cool night wind whispered through the trees, carrying the warmth of a love that would burn bright forever.
