Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Corridor

By the third night of her new, unspoken role as Adrien’s eyes and ears among the staff, Maya had mastered the art of silent movement. Dressed in her standard dark housekeeping uniform, she glided down the mahogany-paneled hallways of the second floor, pushing a discreet utility cart while keeping her senses razor-sharp.
The mansion was suffocatingly quiet at midnight. The fallout from the conference room intrusion had sent ripples through the estate; several senior guards had been quietly dismissed, and external security was doubled. Yet, the mole within the inner circle remained hidden.
As Maya approached the private study at the end of the west gallery, she noticed a thin sliver of light beneath the heavy door. Adrien was supposed to be at a late-night summit across town.
Heart pounding, Maya crept closer. She pushed her cart against the wall and pressed her ear gently against the carved wood.
Muffled voices drifted from inside.
"—if Moretti discovers the offshore accounts in Zurich, the entire syndicate falls apart," a harsh, unfamiliar voice hissed.
"Let him look," a second, cooler voice replied—a voice Maya instantly recognized as Marcus Thorne, one of Adrien’s most trusted senior financial advisers. "We’ve already planted the false embezzlement trails in his personal safe. When the federal auditors arrive tomorrow morning, they won't be looking at us; they’ll be arresting Adrien for racketeering."
Maya’s hand flew to her mouth. They were framing him. The internal leak wasn't just a minor spy; it was a coordinated coup designed to dismantle the Moretti empire from the inside out using federal authorities as their weapon.
Suddenly, a heavy hand clamped over her shoulder from behind, and a cold blade pressed firmly against the side of her neck.
"Well, well," a low, amused voice whispered in her ear. "It seems the little cleaning girl has been sweeping up more than just dust."

Maya froze, every muscle in her body locking up. Before she could panic, a sudden, explosive crash echoed from the foyer below, followed by the shattering of stained glass and the unmistakable pop of a silenced gunshot.
The estate was under attack.
