Chapter 5 - The Downfall of the TraitorWithin twenty minutes, the gunshots had ceased, replaced by the wailing sirens of federal black-and-whites and local police cruisers surrounding the sprawling Moretti estate.

Marcus Thorne and his co-conspirators were hauled out of the mansion in heavy steel handcuffs, their digital drives seized by federal agents who had arrived on scene—not to arrest Adrien, but to receive the authenticated counter-intelligence logs that Adrien and Maya had successfully downloaded from the master safe just in time.

The morning sun began to pierce through the shattered stained-glass windows of the grand foyer, casting long, golden beams across the polished marble floors.

Adrien stood near the base of the staircase, his suit jacket ruined, his shirt stained with smoke, looking exhausted yet entirely victorious. He watched as the last of the federal transports pulled away down the gated driveway.

Maya stood a few feet away, holding a damp cloth and absently wiping a smudge of soot from her cheek. Her shift was technically over, though given the events of the past week, she figured the HR department—if the syndicate even had one—owed her an extensive vacation.

Adrien walked slowly toward her, stopping just inches away.

"You saved my empire, Maya," he said quietly, his voice devoid of its usual cold detachment, filled instead with a deep, raw sincerity. "And you risked your life to do it."

"I told you," Maya replied softly, looking up into his dark green eyes. "I’m very particular about my employers. I prefer bosses who don't get framed by their accountants."

Adrien let out a genuine, deep laugh—the kind of sound that hadn't escaped his lips in years. He reached out, gently taking the damp cloth from her hand and tossing it onto a nearby table, then took her hands in his.

"The position of Head of Internal Security and Executive Operations is officially vacant," Adrien murmured, his thumb lightly stroking the back of her hand. "It comes with hazard pay, an office that doesn't resemble a storage closet, and a mandatory clause requiring you to drink coffee with me every single morning."

Maya smiled, a warm, fluttering feeling blooming in her chest that had nothing to do with danger and everything to do with the man standing before her.

"Does it come with dental coverage?" she teased softly.

"Everything you want," Adrien whispered, and leaned down to kiss her, sealing a partnership forged in chaos, cemented by trust, and destined to last a lifetime.
