Chapter 2 - The Weight of Ten Million Carats

Clarina’s heart pounded against her ribs like a trapped bird. Her mind raced through a dozen frantic possibilities. Was this a sick joke? Was this some elaborate retaliation from Preston’s associates?
Gabriel snapped open the velvet box.
Inside rested a ring that seemed to capture and bend the weak light filtering through the Gothic windows. A flawless, vivid blue diamond—easily exceeding ten carats—surrounded by a halo of smaller white baguettes, set in platinum. It was a masterpiece of jewelry design, a piece fit for European royalty or museum archives. Valued conservatively at ten million dollars.
“Mr. Costa... what are you doing?” Clarina breathed, her voice trembling. “I don't even know you.”
“You saved my younger sister’s life four months ago at Boston Medical Center,” Gabriel said, looking up into her eyes with an intensity that made her breath catch. “She was brought into your trauma bay with internal bleeding after a hit-and-run accident. The attending physicians wanted to close, believing she wouldn't survive the night. You stayed on shift for six extra hours. You refused to let her die.”
Clarina stared at him, the memory flickering back through the exhausting blur of midnight shifts and bloodstained scrubs. “The Jane Doe in Trauma Room 3...”
“Her name is Elena,” Gabriel said softly. “And she told me everything about the nurse who held her hand while she was terrified, who whispered that she wasn't alone. I promised myself then that anyone who possessed that kind of strength and grace would never have to bow to monsters like the ones sitting in these pews.”
Behind them, Chloe Carmichael let out a scoff of disbelief. “This is insane! He’s playing a game! Clarina is a nobody—she’s just a charity case!”
Gabriel didn't look back at Chloe, but his enforcer, Enzo Cortez—standing near the baptismal font—took two deliberate steps toward the pews. The sheer menace in Enzo's posture caused Chloe to snap her mouth shut instantly.
“Clarina Davis,” Gabriel said, his voice ringing clearly through the nave. “You were abandoned today because a man valued a brand of clothing over the character of a human being. Allow me to show you what true value looks like.”
Before Clarina could process his words, Gabriel took her left hand. Her fingers were cold, still trembling from the shock of Preston’s public rejection. With infinite gentleness, he slid the ten-million-dollar blue diamond ring onto her ring finger. It fit as though it had been custom-made for her hand.
“You don't have to marry me today,” Gabriel whispered, his dark eyes softening as he looked up at her. “I am not here to trap you in another cage. But I am offering you an exit from this humiliation. I am offering you a partner who will never make you lower your head.”
Clarina looked down at the ring, then up at Gabriel, and finally across the aisle at Preston.
Preston looked physically sick. The realization that he had just discarded a woman who held the personal loyalty of New York’s most dangerous and powerful man was beginning to sink into his privileged, hollow mind.
“Clarissa... wait,” Preston stammered, taking a desperate step toward the altar. “We can talk about this. The wedding... we can start over. Don't throw our future away over a misunderstanding—”
Clarina raised her hand, stopping Preston in his tracks. The ten-million-dollar ring caught the light, flashing a brilliant, cold blue that seemed to mock every expensive, empty detail of the church.
“Our future ended five minutes ago, Preston,” Clarina said, her voice steady and clear for the first time all afternoon. She looked him dead in the eye. “Enjoy your investors. Enjoy your board of directors. And good luck paying off your father’s debts to Mr. Costa.”
A murmur of absolute shock surged through the congregation. Richard Carmichael clutched his chest, gasping for air as his worst financial nightmare was confirmed aloud in front of Boston and New York’s entire high society.
Gabriel stood up slowly, offering his arm to Clarina.

She hesitated for only a fraction of a second before placing her hand in the crook of his arm.
Together, the mafia king and the emergency-room nurse turned their backs on the altar, walking slowly down the central aisle as the Carmichael family’s empire began to crumble around them.
