Chapter 4 - The Citadel in Manhattan

The penthouse apartment overlooking Central Park South was not a home; it was a fortress disguised as a work of modern art.
Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a panoramic view of the glittering Manhattan skyline, while museum-quality art hung against stark white walls. Yet, despite its staggering scale, the apartment felt strangely empty until Elena—Gabriel’s twenty-year-old sister—burst out of the hallway, her face lighting up with absolute joy the moment she saw Clarina standing by the private elevator.
“Clarina!” Elena cried out, rushing forward and throwing her arms around Clarina’s neck.
Clarina gasped softly, then returned the hug, a genuine smile breaking across her face for the first time in days. “Elena! Look at you—you’re completely healed.”
“Because of you,” Elena said, pulling back to look at Clarina with shining eyes. She noticed the heavy blue diamond sparkling on Clarina’s left hand and let out a delighted gasp. “Oh my god! Did my brother finally use his brain and lock down the only woman in America with actual courage?”
Gabriel walked into the room behind them, loosening his tie and tossing it onto a minimalist sofa. “She hasn't said yes yet, Elena. So watch your tongue before she packs her bags and catches a flight back to Boston.”
“She won't,” Elena laughed, linking her arm through Clarina’s. “Come on, Clarina. My brother is a tyrant who eats business reports for breakfast, but I had the staff prepare actual food for us. And we need to talk about designer gowns because we are burning that thrift-store dress tonight.”
“Hey,” Clarina protested playfully. “My grandmother made that dress.”
“And it served its purpose by weeding out every trashy person in Newport,” Gabriel interjected smoothly as he walked toward his private study. “Rest tonight, Clarina. Tomorrow, the real work begins.”
The following morning, the financial pages of The Wall Street Journal and The Financial Times carried headlines that sent shockwaves through the global corporate elite:
CARMICHAEL LOGISTICS DECLARES EMERGENCY BANKRUPTCY FOLLOWING HOSTILE DEBT CONSOLIDATION.
FEDERAL INVESTIGATORS RAID CARMICHAEL ESTATE IN NEWPORT AMID ALLEGATIONS OF OFFSHORE FRAUD.
Sitting at the marble breakfast bar overlooking Central Park, Clarina scrolled through the digital news articles on her tablet while sipping black coffee. The fall of the Carmichael family had been swift, merciless, and absolute. Richard Carmichael had been detained for questioning regarding corporate embezzlement, while Preston had reportedly locked himself inside a downtown hotel room, abandoning all public appearances as his social circle completely dissolved.
Elena slid a fresh pastry across the counter. “Don't feel bad for them, Clarina. My brother showed me the internal audit reports. For ten years, the Carmichaels funded their lavish lifestyle by embezzling pension funds from maritime union workers. They were criminals wearing tuxedoes.”
“I don't feel bad for them,” Clarina said softly, her eyes lingering on the ring sparkling on her finger. “I just feel... strange. My entire life was about working twelve-hour shifts at a hospital, paying rent, and trying to stay invisible. Now I'm sitting in a billion-dollar fortress while a mafia boss rewrites the New York stock exchange.”
“Gabriel isn't just a mafia boss, Clarina,” Elena said with a quiet, serious expression. “He’s the man who keeps the wolves away from the door. And for the first time in his life, the door he wants to protect is the one you’re standing behind.”
Before Clarina could respond, the private elevator chimed.

Enzo Cortez stepped out, holding a secure encrypted tablet. His face was unusually grim.
“Boss needs you in the study immediately, Miss Davis,” Enzo said, looking directly at Clarina. “Preston Carmichael just made a desperate move. And he’s targeting you.”
