Chapter 2 - The Contract

The next forty-eight hours felt like a fever dream. Victor Hale was not just a businessman; he was the head of Hale Global, a conglomerate that owned everything from fashion houses to tech startups.

He met Lily at a quiet café away from the prying eyes of Michigan Avenue. He didn't offer her a job as a model, as she had secretly hoped. He offered her something more dangerous.

"I am launching a new campaign," Victor said, sliding a thick envelope across the table. "I don't want polished, plastic mannequins. I want faces that tell stories. I want the girl who stands on the sidewalk and stares at the windows, wondering if she belongs."

Lily stared at the envelope. "You watched me?"

"I’ve been watching for weeks," Victor admitted. "I see you every Tuesday and Thursday when I drive to my office. You have a quality, Lily. A raw, unvarnished truth. But your family... the Whitakers... they aren't going to let you go easily, are they?"

Lily’s heart sank. "They think I owe them everything."

"Then we change the ledger," Victor said. "I’m offering you a position as the face of our new 'Authentic' line. It comes with a salary, a private apartment, and legal protection. But it requires you to walk away from them. Completely."

Lily went home that night with the contract in her bag. The moment she entered the Whitaker house, she knew it was a mistake to hesitate. Frank was waiting in the hallway.

"Where have you been?" he demanded.

"I have an opportunity," Lily said, holding the bag tight.

Frank grabbed the bag, ripping it open. He scanned the contract, his face turning a dangerous shade of purple. "Modeling? This is a scam! They’ll chew you up and spit you out. You aren't leaving this house."

"I'm not asking," Lily said, her voice shaking but loud. "I'm telling you. I'm done, Frank."

"You belong to us!" he roared.

Lily walked past him, straight to her room. She packed the few things she owned into a duffel bag. She didn't take the old sweaters. She didn't take the memories of her mother. She took her future.
