Chapter 1 - Shadows and Echoes

The rain tapped a steady, melancholic rhythm against the reinforced glass windows of Dr. Miller’s private clinic, blurring the gray skyline of Chicago into a smear of concrete and steel. Chloe adjusted the collar of her cream-colored cashmere sweater, letting out a soft sigh that fogged the glass slightly. Inside the warm, lavender-scented room, the world felt a million miles away from the cruel, mocking laughter of Derek Mitchell outside the Daily Grind.

Four months.

One hundred and twenty days since the night of the Starlight Charity Gala, since the gunfire shattered the crystal chandeliers, since the dark, terrifying, yet intoxicating hours trapped in a safe room with a man whose name alone made hardened criminals cross the street.

Chloe pressed her hand against her lower abdomen. Beneath the soft fabric, there was a gentle, unmistakable curve—hardly visible to strangers who dismissed her as having "let herself go," but undeniable to her. A new life, small and fragile, was growing inside her. It was a secret weapon forged in the crucible of trauma and unexpected passion.

“You’re miles away, Chloe,” Dr. Miller said gently, clicking off the ultrasound monitor. He removed his latex gloves and tossed them into the bin. “Everything looks textbook. Heartbeat is strong, development is right on track. But I want you to remember what I said about stress. Running a bakery and dealing with downtown crowds is fine, but emotional cortisol isn't good for the baby.”

“I’m fine, Doctor,” Chloe smiled, slipping off the examination table and straightening her clothes. “Just... adjusting to life.”

“Life with a newborn is a whole different beast,” Dr. Miller noted with a knowing smile. “Do you have family support? What about the father?”

Chloe’s smile tightened slightly. How could she explain that the father was Dominic Russo? How could she tell a respectable physician that her child’s father was a man who owned half the city’s shipping ports, controlled the underground syndicates, and could probably have a man erased with a single phone call?

“He doesn’t know,” Chloe said quietly.

Dr. Miller didn’t press. In his line of work, discretion was second nature. “Well, if you need to loop him in, sooner is better than later. A child deserves to know where they come from.”

Twenty minutes later, Chloe stepped out into the misty Chicago air. The damp wind whipped her dark hair across her face as she walked the three blocks toward her newly opened bakery, Sweet Relief. Opening the shop had been her dream long before Derek proposed with a cheap ring he bought on credit, and she had fought tooth and nail to keep it afloat even after he walked out.

Little did she know, across the city in a high-rise executive suite overlooking the river, another search was quietly reaching its final, inevitable conclusion.

In the dimly lit penthouse office of Russo Enterprises, Dominic Russo stood with his hands resting on the back of a leather armchair. His sharp gray suit was immaculate, his tie perfectly knotted, but his dark, piercing eyes were fixed on the city below. The scar slicing through his left eyebrow twitched slightly as he replayed a memory he hadn’t been able to shake for four months.

The event coordinator in the emerald-green dress.

The woman who hadn’t screamed when the shooting started. The woman who had looked him dead in the eye in the dark safe room, argued with him about survival tactics, and then vanished into the pre-dawn mist before he could even learn her last name.

For weeks, his intelligence network had turned up empty. She had used a generic alias for the gala registration, and security cameras had captured only a blur of green silk disappearing into a taxi. But Dominic Russo did not give up pursuits easily. What he wanted, he found.

The heavy mahogany door opened, and Noah, his most trusted enforcer and head of security, stepped inside, laying a thick manila folder on the desk.

“We found her, Boss,” Noah said, his voice deep and steady.

Dominic didn’t turn around immediately. He poured two fingers of amber scotch into a crystal glass, swirling the liquid before taking a slow sip.

“Talk,” Dominic commanded.

“Her name is Chloe Bennett,” Noah read from the file. “Thirty-two years old. Former event coordinator for the Starlight Charity. Six months ago, her fiancé dumped her—some punk named Derek Mitchell who works in real estate. She used her savings to open a small bakery downtown called Sweet Relief.”

Dominic turned slowly, his dark eyes locking onto Noah. “Is she seeing anyone?”

Noah hesitated for a fraction of a second, a slight frown crossing his scarred face. “No, Boss. But... there’s something else in the medical records our contact pulled from a private clinic this morning.”

Dominic’s gaze narrowed. “Spit it out, Noah.”

“She’s four months pregnant.”

The room went dead silent. The heavy ticking of a grandfather clock in the corner seemed to echo like a drumbeat.

Dominic’s mind raced backward, calculating dates, hours, and the exact night of the Starlight Gala. Four months. Exactly four months.

The glass in Dominic’s hand cracked, a hairline fracture spreading across the crystal as his grip tightened instinctively. A dark, dangerous storm ignited behind his eyes.

“Get the car,” Dominic said, his voice dropping into a register so cold it made Noah flinch. “We’re going for a visit.”
