Chapter 6 - A New Dawn

Three months later.
The rain over Chicago had cleared, leaving the city washed in the golden, brilliant light of a crisp autumn morning.
Inside the private maternity ward of St. Jude Medical Center—a hospital heavily secured by men in black suits—the atmosphere was entirely different from the chaos of the estate siege.
Chloe sat propped up against a bed of fluffy white pillows, wearing a soft pink robe, cradling a tiny, perfect bundle wrapped in a cashmere blanket against her chest.
The baby had a shock of dark hair and Dominic’s unmistakable, fierce gray eyes.
The door to the private suite swung open quietly.
Dominic walked in. He had discarded his suit jacket, rolling up the sleeves of his crisp white shirt, revealing the hard lines of his forearms. He looked tired, the dark circles beneath his eyes evidence of a sleepless night spent pacing the hospital corridors, but when he looked at Chloe and the baby, his entire face softened into something profound and gentle.
He walked over to the bed, sitting down on the edge of the mattress with infinite care, as if afraid he might break them both.
“How is my son?” Dominic whispered, his large hand gently brushing the baby’s tiny cheek.
“He has your stubbornness,” Chloe smiled, her voice laced with exhaustion and deep, abiding happiness. “He refused to sleep until three in the morning.”
Dominic leaned down, pressing a tender, lingering kiss to Chloe’s forehead before gently resting his lips against the baby’s soft head.
“Thank you,” Dominic murmured against her hair.
“For what?”
“For not running away,” Dominic said, looking deep into her eyes. “For walking into my dark world and bringing light into it.”
Chloe shifted slightly, adjusting the blanket as the baby let out a soft yawn. “I didn't walk into your world, Dominic. We built a new one together.”
A slow, genuine smile spread across Dominic’s face—the kind of smile that no one outside of this room had ever been privileged to see.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box, opening it to reveal a magnificent ring featuring a brilliant diamond flanked by deep emeralds.
“You never gave me a proper proposal,” Dominic noted smoothly. “And I am not a man who takes no for an answer.”
Chloe laughed, shaking her head as tears of joy welled in her eyes. “You’re terrible, Dominic Russo.”
May you like
“I am,” he agreed without a hint of remorse, sliding the ring onto her finger. “And you’re stuck with me forever.”
Outside the hospital window, the sun rose fully over the Chicago skyline, casting a warm, golden glow across a city that now belonged to them both. Derek Mitchell was locked away in a federal cell, the bakery was thriving under new management, and the mafia boss had finally found his true empire in the arms of the woman everyone else had foolishly underestimated.
