Chapter 2 - The Echoes of the GalleryThe heavy oak service doors swung shut behind them, cutting off the suffocating noise of the ballroom and plunging the dimly lit stone corridor into blessed, echoing silence.

Leo released Tessa’s hand slowly, though his fingers lingered for a fraction of a second longer than necessary. He took three deep, controlled breaths, the frantic panic in his eyes receding beneath a veneer of cold, razor-sharp focus.

“You shouldn't have done that,” Leo said. His voice was a deep, resonant baritone that carried none of the trembling vulnerability he had shown moments ago. “Dominic now knows you intervened. He’ll make you a target just to get to me.”

Tessa exhaled a shaky breath, setting her empty tray down on a stone console table. She smoothed down the front of her simple black waitress uniform, lifting her chin with a stubborn spark of pride.

“I couldn't just stand there and watch a man be humiliated by a bully with a pair of stolen headphones,” Tessa replied, her green eyes flashing. “Besides, I’ve survived landlords threatening to evict me and managers threatening to fire me. A guy like Dominic doesn't scare me.”

A faint, curious smile touched the corner of Leo’s lips. It was a subtle, rare expression that softened the harsh, aristocratic lines of his face.

“You don't know who Dominic is,” Leo murmured, stepping closer to her under the dim wall sconces. Up close, she realized just how tall he was—broad-shouldered, imposing, and dressed in a meticulously tailored charcoal tuxedo that screamed quiet, lethal power. “And you certainly don't know what my father is capable of.”

“Your father just watched you have a panic attack and told a random waitress to handle it,” Tessa pointed out bluntly. “He doesn't care about you. He cares about control.”

Leo’s jaw tightened, a muscle ticking in his cheek. She had hit a raw nerve with surgical precision.

Before he could answer, heavy footsteps echoed down the stone hallway.

A tall man in an immaculate gray suit rounded the corner. It wasn't Dominic. It was Marcus Vance, Declan Gallagher’s chief legal counsel and the syndicate’s ruthless fixer—a man whose smile was always a prelude to a catastrophe.

“Leo,” Marcus said smoothly, his eyes sliding sideways to evaluate Tessa with cold, professional detachment. Then he looked back at the heir. “Your father requests your presence in the private study immediately. And he wishes for the young lady to accompany you.”

Leo’s eyes darkened into a stormy gray. “She has nothing to do with this, Marcus. Send her back to the catering staff.”

“The boss was very specific, Leo,” Marcus smiled thinly, his tone carrying an absolute, unbreakable command. “He said the girl who knows how to ground the heir should be present when we discuss the future of the estate.”

Tessa’s stomach did a nervous flip. She had wanted to slip back into the kitchen, grab her coat, and disappear into the rainy Greyhaven night before her rent check bounced. Instead, she had just caught the personal attention of the most dangerous crime boss in the Northeast.

“I’ll go,” Tessa said quietly, stepping forward beside Leo.

Leo looked down at her, a flicker of genuine protectiveness flashing in his eyes. He reached out, gently wrapping his hand around her wrist—not with the suffocating grip of a captor, but with a firm, grounding anchor.

“Stay close to me,” Leo instructed softly. “No matter what my father says.”

The private study of the Gallagher estate was less of a room and more of a museum of power. Heavy mahogany bookshelves lined the walls, lit by green-shaded banker lamps, while a massive floor-to-ceiling window looked out over the stormy cliffs of the estate.

Declan Gallagher sat behind a vast leather-topped desk, swirling amber whiskey in a crystal tumbler. He didn't look up immediately as Leo and Tessa walked in.

“Leave us, Marcus,” Declan commanded without raising his voice.

Marcus nodded, stepping out and closing the heavy oak doors with a soft click.

Declan finally raised his ice-blue eyes, fixing his terrifying gaze directly on Tessa.

“You have a steady pulse, young woman,” Declan said slowly, his voice raspy with age and authority. “Most people run when Dominic makes a spectacle. You stepped into the crossfire.”

“I stopped a scene from getting out of hand,” Tessa answered, keeping her voice steady despite the adrenaline pumping through her veins. “If your nephew wants to wage psychological warfare, he should do it outside of a catered event where I’m trying to earn an honest paycheck.”

Declan let out a dry, humorless chuckle that sounded like stones grinding together.

“An honest paycheck,” the old boss repeated, leaning back in his leather chair. He opened a manila folder resting on his desk, sliding a single sheet of paper across the polished wood toward her.

Tessa glanced down at it—and her blood ran instantly cold.

It was a detailed financial dossier. Her current bank account balance: $14.50. Her past-due electric bill notice. Her apartment landlord’s name, and the exact date her lease was set to expire before eviction.

“You think you’re invisible, Tessa Miller,” Declan said softly. “You think because you wear a black vest and carry a tray, the world doesn't see your struggles. But in Greyhaven, nothing remains hidden for long.”

Leo stepped in front of Tessa, his body shielding her from his father’s predatory gaze, his voice laced with suppressed fury.

“Leave her out of this, Father,” Leo demanded, his tone dropping into a dangerous register. “If you have a problem with me, deal with me.”

Declan stared at his son, his expression unreadable. Then, a slow, calculated smile spread across the old man’s face.

“I am dealing with you, Leo,” Declan replied smoothly. “For years, the syndicate has whispered that you are unfit to inherit because of your... sensitivities. They think your quiet nature is a weakness. They think Dominic is the one with the fire to lead.”

Declan stood up slowly, walking around the desk to stand directly in front of them.

“A true Gallagher king does not hide behind headphones,” Declan declared, his eyes shifting back to Tessa. “And a true queen does not fold under pressure. If you want to protect your little apartment, Miss Miller—if you want your electric bills paid and your life secured—you are going to play a very specific role in my family’s future.”
