Chapter 5 - The Neural BridgeThe fallout from the incident at Pier 4 was swift. The Valenti family retreated into total silence, licking their wounds, while within the Pascale estate, the legend of the fierce physical therapist who stood alongside their boss in a firefight cemented Tessa’s status among the guards as something akin to royalty.

But inside the master suite, the reality was far more grueling.
Massimo’s reckless stunt had caused a minor inflammatory setback in his lumbar region, forcing Tessa to implement a punishing seventy-two-hour regimen of targeted electrical stimulation, hydrotherapy, and deep-tissue manipulation.
It was late Thursday night. The storm had cleared, leaving a starry, freezing night sky over Boston.
Tessa sat on the edge of Massimo’s low rehabilitation mat, adjusting the frequency dial on a portable electro-therapy unit. Sticky electrode pads were mapped across his lower back and thighs.
“Tell me when you feel the current,” Tessa instructed, her fingers resting lightly against his ankle.
“Nothing,” Massimo grunted, lying flat on his back, staring up at the ceiling. His shirt was off, revealing the intricate web of surgical scars crisscrossing his torso and back—a physical map of the violent world he inhabited.
Tessa adjusted the dial up two increments. “Now?”
“Still nothing.”
She increased the frequency again, watching his facial micro-expressions with clinical precision. For weeks, the neural pathways below the L1 level had been completely dead—silent highways blocked by scar tissue and trauma.
Suddenly, Massimo’s breath hitched.
His right big toe twitched.
Tessa froze. Her hand hovered over the dial. She looked down at his foot.
“Did you feel that?” she whispered, hardly daring to breathe.
Massimo turned his head, his eyes wide and fixed on his own foot. “My... my heel. It felt warm.”
“It’s not warmth, it’s a sensory impulse crossing the lesion!” Tessa’s heart leaped into her throat. She rapidly calibrated the frequency, maintaining the exact electrical threshold. “Try to flex your ankle, Massimo. Mental intent. Send the signal from your brain straight down the spine.”
Massimo closed his eyes. Every muscle in his upper body went rigid with intense concentration. Veins stood out along his temples as he poured every ounce of his formidable willpower into the task.
For ten agonizing seconds, nothing happened.
And then, with a slow, jerky movement, his right foot flexed upward.
Tessa gasped, clapping both hands over her mouth to hold back a sob of pure professional triumph.
Massimo opened his eyes, staring at his foot as if it belonged to a stranger. A tremor ran through his massive frame, and for the first time since Tessa had met him, the terrifying mafia boss looked like a man who had just witnessed a miracle.
“It worked,” Massimo whispered, his voice cracking. “I moved it.”
“You moved it!” Tessa cheered, grabbing his shoulders and shaking him gently in her excitement, completely forgetting her clinical boundaries. “The neural bridge is forming! The pathways are repairing themselves! Massimo, you’re going to walk!”
Massimo didn't say a word. He caught her wrists, pulling her down toward him with surprising gentleness until she was kneeling right beside his chest, inches from his face.
The clinical triumph in the room suddenly dissolved, replaced by a suffocating, electric tension.
Massimo’s dark eyes searched her face, mapping every line of awe, exhaustion, and fierce dedication.
“Fifty thousand dollars was supposed to be a transaction, Tessa,” Massimo murmured, his voice a low, raspy caress that sent shivers straight down her spine. “Three months of work, and you leave.”
Tessa’s breath caught. She couldn't look away from his gaze. Her mind raced back to her doctoral program, her tuition deadlines, her old life waiting across the city.
“My contract... ends in two weeks,” she whispered.
“Tear it up,” Massimo replied instantly, his thumb brushing lightly across her pulse point on her wrist. “Stay here. Stay with me. Name your price—double, triple, whatever you want. Not as my therapist. As my partner.”
The air in the room felt entirely depleted of oxygen. Tessa knew the danger. She knew the enemies lurking in the shadows outside the iron gates, the FBI files, the violent history written across his skin.
Yet, looking down into the eyes of the man who had fought death and defied paralysis, she realized the terrifying truth: she had fallen completely, irreversibly in love with her patient.
“I don't want your money, Massimo,” Tessa whispered, leaning in just a fraction closer.
“Then what do you want?”
“To see you cross this room on your own two feet,” she smiled softly.
Massimo’s mouth curved into a slow, breathtaking smile—the first genuine, unguarded smile she had ever seen on him.
May you like
“Deal,” he breathed.
And right there, beneath the stars and the shadow of an empire, they sealed a pact that no cartel or court could ever break.
