Chapter 6 - Walking into the SunTwo weeks later, the grand solarium of the Pascale estate was transformed.

The medical equipment had been pushed to the corners, replaced by a simple wooden parallel bar set up near the floor-to-ceiling windows. Outside, brilliant spring sunlight flooded the room, melting the last remnants of winter frost off the lawn and sparkling across the calm blue waters of the cove.

Elena stood by the doorway holding a tray of coffee, her eyes suspiciously bright. Marcus stood near the rear exit, his arms crossed over his chest, wearing a rare, approving grin.

And at the center of the room stood Massimo Pascale.

He wasn't in his wheelchair.

His hands gripped the wooden rails of the parallel bars so tightly his knuckles were white. Sweat beaded on his forehead, and his entire body shook from the monumental exertion of holding his own weight upright for the first time in over a year.

A few feet away stood Tessa, kneeling on the hardwood floor, holding out her hands like a beacon.

“You’ve got the balance, Massimo,” Tessa encouraged, her voice steady, filled with absolute, unwavering faith. “Trust your core. Take the weight on your right foot.”

Massimo closed his eyes, drawing a deep, shuddering breath. He visualized the neural pathway, sending the command screaming down his spine.

His right foot stepped forward.

A collective gasp of awe rippled through the small group of onlookers.

Then, his left foot followed. One agonizing, miraculous inch at a time.

Two steps. Three steps.

He was trembling from head to toe, but he was moving forward.

With a final, triumphant push, Massimo released his grip on the parallel bars. He swayed unsteadily for a fraction of a second, his arms outstretched—and then he took one independent step across the open floor directly into Tessa’s arms.

Tessa caught him, laughing and crying all at once as they tumbled together onto the soft rug, wrapped in a fierce, desperate embrace.

Massimo buried his face in her neck, his broad shoulders heaving as the crushing weight of a year’s worth of despair finally shattered into dust.

“I told you,” Tessa whispered into his hair, tears streaming down her cheeks. “I told you you were going to walk.”

Massimo pulled back, cupping her face in his large, warm hands. The dangerous, hardened mafia boss was completely gone, replaced by a man utterly undone by love and gratitude.

“Fifty thousand dollars was the best investment I ever made,” Massimo murmured, before leaning down and kissing her with a fierce, possessive tenderness that wiped away every shadow of the past.

From the doorway, Elena cleared her throat gently, turning away with a smile. “I’ll prepare two cups of coffee, then. Looks like the doctor is going to be staying permanently.”

Tessa laughed, resting her forehead against Massimo’s as the brilliant spring sunlight poured through the glass, illuminating a future they had fought through hell to reach together.
