Chapter 2 - Poison and Shadows

The next forty-eight hours passed in a chaotic blur of flashing red lights, sterile hospital corridors, and endless police interrogations.

Vega was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit at St. Jude Memorial. The toxicology reports confirmed our worst fears: her bloodstream was laced with dangerously elevated levels of heavy metals and cardiac glycosides—the result of a deliberate, prolonged regimen of poison disguised as flu medicine. The doctors told us that if we had arrived even twelve hours later, her heart would have permanently failed.

I sat in the waiting room chair, wrapped in a hospital blanket, holding a paper cup of lukewarm coffee. Felix sat beside me, his arm wrapped tightly around my shoulders, while Janice slept soundly on the vinyl couch, her head resting on my lap, her small fingers still clutching my coat sleeve.

Detective Sarah Reyes, a sharp, no-nonsense investigator with the city police department, walked into the waiting room holding a thick manila folder.

"Mrs. Paige Vance?" Reyes asked softly, taking a seat opposite us.

"How is she? Is Vega going to make it?" I asked immediately, my voice raspy from exhaustion.

"The medical team managed to initiate chelation therapy in time to flush the toxins," Detective Reyes replied, offering a reassuring nod. "She’s stable. She’s awake, and she’s talking. But... Paige, what we found at your brother’s property goes far deeper than a domestic assault."

Felix leaned forward. "What do you mean?"

Reyes opened the folder, revealing photographs of forensic evidence collected from Melvin’s house and his vehicle.

"We executed a search warrant on his basement," Reyes explained, her voice dropping into a grave tone. "We found a hidden safe behind the drywall. Inside was a secondary life insurance policy—not just the two-hundred-thousand-dollar policy he shoved in your face, but a second, unregistered policy for one million dollars written through an overseas shell firm. The sole beneficiary was Melvin."

I swallowed hard. "And the man I saw him meeting in the park?"

"His name is Marcus Vance—no relation to you, but a known enforcer for an illegal high-stakes gambling ring operating out of the docks," Reyes said. "Melvin was in debt to them for over three hundred thousand dollars. He put up his wife's life as collateral. Marcus was there to make sure Melvin finished the job tonight so they could collect on the policy."

Tears pricked my eyes as I looked down at sleeping Janice. "He was going to kill her mother and leave his five-year-old child with nothing."

"It gets worse," Reyes added softly, looking at Janice with deep sympathy. "We interviewed your brother at the precinct. He’s trying to claim that you and Felix were conspiring with Vega to steal his money, and that Janice was coached to make up stories about the dog treats."

"He's lying!" Felix snapped, his fists clenching. "He brought those treats to our house himself! Janice freaked out the second she saw them!"

"We know he’s lying, Mr. Vance," Reyes assured him. "Forensics tested the dog treats Melvin brought to your house. They weren't dog treats at all. They were molded blocks of industrial bone-meal fertilizer mixed with raw arsenic—the same compound found in his basement. He didn't bring them for your dog, Paige. He brought them intending to leave them in your pantry, so if Vega died, he could point the finger at your household and claim there was poison stored near her food."

A wave of nausea hit me so hard I had to set my coffee down. He hadn't just tried to murder his wife; he had set a trap to frame me and Felix, ensuring that if anything went wrong, his own sister would take the fall while he walked away with a million dollars.

"He's a monster," I whispered.

"He's facing attempted premeditated murder, conspiracy to commit murder, endearment of a minor, and insurance fraud," Reyes said firmly. "He will never see the outside of a state prison again. But right now, we need to talk about legal guardianship for Janice."

I looked down at the little girl sleeping peacefully on my lap. Her sticky fingers, her quiet intuition, her strange, miraculous words that had saved her mother's life.

"She stays with us," I said without a single second of hesitation. "For as long as Vega needs to recover, and forever if necessary. Nobody is taking her away."

Reyes smiled softly, a rare warmth breaking through her tough exterior. "Child Protective Services has already signed off on emergency placement with you and Felix. But Paige... be careful. Marcus Vance and his crew are still out there. They know Melvin didn't pay his debt, and they know the police are investigating the insurance policy. They might think you have the paper trail."

I locked eyes with the detective. "Let them come. I’m done being afraid of my brother’s shadows."
