Chapter 5 - The Final Trap

The letter inside the vault wasn't a confession. It was the ultimate proof of my brother's depravity.

To whoever opens this box, the letter read. If you are reading this, I am either dead or behind bars. The enclosed ledgers contain the complete banking records, extortion logs, and offshore account numbers for Marcus Vance’s syndicate. I kept these as insurance. If Marcus tries to collect my debt, expose these files to the federal prosecutor. It will put him and his entire board of directors away for life.

My eyes scanned the pages of the ledger. It was a goldmine of evidence—names, dates, wire transfers, and dates of violent enforcement actions spanning five years. Melvin hadn't just been a victim of loan sharks; he had been their accountant, helping them launder money until he fell into debt himself and tried to sacrifice his own wife to buy his way out.

"Reyes, I have the ledgers," I whispered into my collar microphone. "It’s everything. Names, offshore accounts, Marcus's entire operation."

"Copy that, Paige," Reyes’ voice returned instantly. "Pack the box, step out through the main lobby. Our team will secure you the moment you reach the street."

I carefully placed the ledgers and flash drives into my handbag, took a deep breath, and walked out of the quiet vault room, my boots clicking against the marble floor of the main lobby.

As I pushed through the heavy brass revolving doors onto the bustling sidewalk, the cold winter air hit my face.

Then, everything happened in a split second.

A black SUV pulled up directly to the curb in front of me, sliding its side door open. A tall man in a dark tailored coat stepped out, blocking my path—Marcus Vance.

"Mrs. Vance," Marcus said, his voice terrifyingly smooth, his right hand resting inside his coat pocket. "I believe you have something that belongs to my organization."

"Stay where you are, Marcus," I said, holding my purse tight against my chest. "The police are everywhere."

Marcus smirked, glancing around the crowded street. "They might be, but my man is currently standing outside your house on Elm Street. One phone call from me, and the officers on your porch won't be able to react fast enough to save your husband or your little niece."

My breath hitched. The world seemed to stop spinning. He had a secondary team targeting my home.

"You're lying," I choked out.

"Test me," Marcus sneered, pulling out a cell phone with his left hand. "Hand over the bag, get in the vehicle, and nobody at home gets hurt."

In my ear canal, Detective Reyes’ voice barked with urgent intensity: "Paige, do not move! We have Marcus surrounded! Team, move in!"

"NO! DON'T!" I screamed aloud into the street.

Before Marcus could press a button on his phone, a loud, familiar sound echoed from down the block—a frantic, furious barking.

A white delivery van parked fifty feet away burst open, and out sprinted Felix, holding a police tactical radio, alongside a police K-9 officer and two federal agents.

"MARCUS VANCE! DROP THE PHONE AND GET ON THE GROUND!" the federal agent bellowed through a megaphone.

Marcus's eyes widened in shock. He realized instantly that he had walked straight into a massive, multi-agency trap. He reached into his coat for his weapon, but before he could clear the holster, the police K-9 launched itself through the air, tearing into his arm and forcing him violently to the pavement.

Undercover officers flooded the street from every direction, slamming Marcus’s accomplices against the side of the SUV and snapping handcuffs onto their wrists.

I fell back against the stone wall of the bank, my knees shaking uncontrollably, tears spilling down my cheeks as Felix ran across the pavement and threw his arms around me, pulling me into a fierce, protective hug.

"It's over, Paige," Felix breathed, his voice breaking as he held me tight. "The police raided the secondary team at our house five minutes ago. Reyes set up a fake signal to trick Marcus into thinking his men were in position. Vega, Janice, and Max are completely safe."

I buried my face into Felix’s shoulder, sobbing with pure, overwhelming relief as the sirens filled the city air, signaling the end of the long, dark nightmare that had threatened to tear our lives apart.
