Chapter 4 - The War in the Shadows“Step past that line,” Sebastian growled, lowering his gun until it aligned directly with the lead guard’s chest, “and I will end you.”

The four guards froze. They were professionals, but they knew who Sebastian Vale was. They knew he wasn't a corporate figurehead playing at power—he was a man who had personally overseen the dark, hidden operations of the Vale family for nearly a decade.
Julian’s eyes narrowed into angry slits. “You wouldn't dare shoot my men in front of your little mistress.”
“Try me, grandfather,” Sebastian spat, his voice laced with pure poison. “I have nothing left to lose. You stole four years of my life. You stole my children’s infancy. You think I care about a police report tonight?”
I stepped forward, placing a hand lightly on Sebastian’s back. I could feel the violent tension thrumming through his muscles.
“Julian,” I said, my voice surprisingly steady, echoing through the wide living room. “You’re too late.”
The old man turned his glare toward me, his lips curling in contempt. “Silence, girl. You have no standing here.”
“I have every standing,” I replied, pointing to the glowing monitor on the desk behind us. “Your head of security, Arthur Vance, didn't destroy my letters. He digitized them. He logged the timestamps showing that you personally received every single notice of my pregnancy four years ago.”
Julian’s arrogant expression flickered for a fraction of a second. A tiny twitch appeared near his left eye.
“Vance is an old man living in Italy,” Julian sneered. “His records are inadmissible hearsay.”
“Not when they’re backed up by the federal prosecutor’s office,” a new voice called out from the elevator foyer.
Everyone whirled around.
Marcus stepped into the living room, flanked by six uniformed New York City police officers and two men in sharp navy suits carrying federal badges.
“Julian Vale,” the lead federal agent announced, pulling a red-stamped warrant from his coat. “We have an emergency federal injunction blocking your petition for custody. Furthermore, we have a warrant for your arrest regarding interstate fraud, obstruction of justice, and human trafficking conspiracy related to the suppression of legal heirs.”
Julian’s face drained of color. He slammed his silver cane against the floor. “This is an outrage! I am Julian Vale! You can’t touch me!”
“I touched you, grandfather,” Sebastian said coldly, slowly lowering his weapon and slipping it back into his shoulder holster. “While you were preparing your little raid on my apartment, my legal team was presenting Vance’s encrypted archives to a federal judge. I didn't just give them the letters about Maya. I gave them twenty years of your offshore tax accounts, your illegal wiretaps, and the bribe payments you made to buy off city officials.”
Julian stared at his grandson in absolute horror. “You... you burned the family empire?”
“No,” Sebastian said, stepping right up to the old man, looking down at him with cold, unforgiving gray eyes. “I burned you. The empire belongs to my children now.”
The federal agents stepped forward, grabbing Julian’s arms. The old man tried to fight them off, his frail body shaking with impotent rage, but the handcuffs clicked loudly around his thin wrists.
“You’re a traitor, Sebastian!” Julian screamed as he was pulled toward the elevator. “You destroyed everything I built! For her! For a common girl and three illegitimate bastards!”
Sebastian didn't flinch. He watched calmly as his grandfather was hauled into the elevator, his shouting fading as the steel doors slid shut.
The living room went completely silent. The police officers cleared the four hired guards from the premises, leaving only Marcus, Sebastian, and me standing in the center of the quiet penthouse.
Marcus bowed his head slightly. “The building is fully secured now, boss. Julian’s authority has been completely stripped by the board. The emergency meeting tomorrow morning is just a formality to officially name you Chairman.”
“Thank you, Marcus,” Sebastian said quietly. “Get some rest.”
Marcus nodded and walked back toward the elevator, leaving us alone once again.
I stood there, my hands shaking, the adrenaline of the last hour slowly draining from my body, leaving me exhausted and hollow. I looked at Sebastian. He was staring at the empty elevator doors, his shoulders slightly stooped, looking like a man who had just survived a war.
“It’s over?” I whispered.
Sebastian turned to me slowly. He looked at me for a long time, then slowly walked over to the sofa and sank into it, resting his face in his hands.
“It’s over,” he rasped out. “Julian will never touch you or the kids again. He’ll spend whatever years he has left in a federal facility or under house arrest with an ankle monitor.”
I walked over to the sofa and sat down beside him, keeping a few inches of space between us.
“You destroyed your own grandfather to protect us,” I said quietly.
Sebastian lifted his head, turning to look at me. “He wasn't my grandfather, Maya. He was a monster who raised me to be just like him. The best thing I ever did in my life was loving you—because loving you was the only thing that kept me human.”
He reached out, his hand trembling as he gently took mine.
“I know I can’t undo the last four years,” Sebastian whispered, tears glinting in his gray eyes. “I know I missed their first steps, their first words, the nights you spent crying alone in that basement. I will spend every day of the rest of my life trying to make it up to you, if you’ll let me.”
I looked down at our joined hands. For four years, I had held onto my anger like a shield, believing it was the only thing keeping me safe from being hurt again. But sitting here beside him, seeing the raw pain and absolute sincerity in his eyes, I realized that my anger wasn't protecting me anymore. It was just keeping me cold.
“They need a father, Sebastian,” I said softly.
Sebastian’s breath caught in his throat. “And you? What do you need, Maya?”
I looked up, meeting his silver gaze.
“I need the man I married,” I whispered. “Not the billionaire. Not the Chairman. I need the Sebastian who used to make me pancakes on Sunday mornings in our tiny kitchen before the world got in the way.”

A tear finally broke from Sebastian’s eye, tracing a path down his cheek. He leaned forward, resting his forehead against mine, his arms wrapping gently around my waist, pulling me close against his chest.
“He’s still here, Maya,” Sebastian choked out. “I promise you... he never left.”
