Chapter 5 - The Reconstruction of UsSpring arrived in Manhattan with a gentle, blooming warmth that washed away the cold ghosts of the past winter.

Six months had passed since the night Julian Vale was taken away in handcuffs. The legal storm that followed had been massive, but Sebastian handled it with ruthless efficiency. Julian had entered a plea deal due to his failing health, agreeing to forfeit all voting rights and live under strict federal house arrest at a remote estate in upstate New York, far away from the city and the family he had tried to destroy.

Vale Enterprises had been restructured completely. Sebastian took over as Chairman and CEO, systematically replacing Julian’s corrupt old guard with young, ethical leadership. But more importantly, he changed his own life.

He didn't work eighty hours a week anymore. He didn't sleep at the office. By 5:00 PM every single day, the most powerful businessman in New York was home.

We hadn't moved into a cold penthouse or a sprawling, impersonal estate. Instead, Sebastian bought a beautiful, sunlit brownstone on the Upper West Side, overlooking Central Park. It had a private garden in the back, a massive kitchen where flour regularly covered the countertops, and three bright, colorful bedrooms on the top floor.

It was a Sunday morning. The smell of fresh coffee and cinnamon pancakes filled the warm house.

I stood by the kitchen island, wearing an oversized sweater and soft leggings, laughing as Owen tried to paint a smiley face on his pancake with maple syrup, resulting in a sticky disaster across his plate.

Noah was sitting at the table, intently reading a picture book about dinosaurs, while Ivy was demanding that "Daddy" cut her strawberry into smaller pieces.

Sebastian was standing by the stove, wearing plain sweatpants and a gray t-shirt—completely unrecognizable from the intimidating billionaire who graced the covers of financial magazines. He was cutting strawberries with painstaking precision, his gray eyes soft and full of warm light.

“Smaller, Daddy!” Ivy insisted, stomping her tiny foot in a cute imitation of impatience.

“Yes, your highness,” Sebastian chuckled, placing the perfectly quartered strawberries onto her blue plastic plate. “Is this acceptable to the royal standards?”

Ivy giggled, grabbing a strawberry piece and popping it into her mouth. “Yes!”

Sebastian smiled, reaching out to ruffle Noah’s dark hair as he walked over to the counter where I was standing. He wrapped his arms around my waist from behind, resting his chin comfortably on my shoulder, pulling me back against his chest.

“Morning, beautiful,” he whispered into my ear, his breath warm against my skin.

“Morning, chef,” I teased, turning my head slightly to look at him. “You’re getting better with the pancakes. Only burned two today.”

“Hey,” Sebastian feigned offense, kissing the corner of my neck. “That was intentional caramelization. Very exclusive. Very expensive.”

I laughed, turning around in his arms to face him. I rested my hands on his chest, feeling the steady, comforting beat of his heart under his shirt.

Over the last six months, we had taken things slow. We had gone on dates—real dates, without security details hovering over us, without corporate scandals hanging over our heads. We had talked through every painful memory, wept over lost time, and slowly, piece by piece, rebuilt the foundation that had been stolen from us four years ago.

Sebastian looked down at me, his gray eyes searching my face with a deep, quiet reverence that still made my heart skip a beat.

“What?” I asked softly.

“Nothing,” he whispered, brushing a stray strand of hair behind my ear. “Just thinking about how close I came to losing all of this.”

“You didn't lose it,” I reminded him softly. “We found our way back.”

“I have a surprise for you today,” Sebastian said, a faint, secretive smile touching his lips.

I raised an eyebrow. “A surprise? Sebastian, if you bought me another bakery, I swear—”

“No bakeries, I promise,” he chuckled. “Put on something nice. The kids are staying with Marcus and the nanny for a few hours this afternoon.”

“Where are we going?”

“You’ll see.”
