CHAPTER 1 — The Ring on the Floor

Emma Whitaker woke up on the cold kitchen floor with pain tearing through her body.
Her hand trembled over her swollen belly. Blood stained her temple. Beside her lay her husband’s wedding ring.
Not on his hand.
On the floor.
Beside her cracked phone.
Like something discarded.
Her screen lit up with a message from Grant:
Stop humiliating yourself. I’m at dinner.
Emma stared at it until the words blurred.
Then another contraction hit—sharp, violent.
Still, she forced herself to move.
911 first.
Then her brothers.
“Emma?” Caleb’s voice snapped awake immediately.
“Kitchen,” she whispered. “I’m bleeding… something’s wrong with the baby.”
Silence.
Then Caleb’s tone changed completely. “Where is Grant?”
Emma turned her head slightly.
Through the hallway, she saw it.
A white shirt draped over the banister.
A lipstick stain on the collar.
Not hers.
“At dinner,” she said quietly. “With Madison Vale.”
Caleb didn’t swear. That silence said enough.
“Dylan is coming. Don’t close your eyes.”
Dylan Whitaker arrived first.
He didn’t hesitate when he saw the locked back door. One hard hit broke it open.
Inside, he found Emma on the floor.
Still breathing. Barely.
“Hey, Em,” he said, dropping beside her.
She tried to smile. “Your boots are dirty.”
“Don’t worry about it.”
Paramedics arrived seconds later.
“Thirty-three weeks?” one asked.
“Thirty-three tomorrow,” Emma answered.
“Pain level?”
“Seven.”
Dylan looked at her.
“Be honest,” he said softly.
Emma closed her eyes.
“Nine.”
When they mentioned taking her to the nearest hospital, Emma shook her head immediately.
“Mercy General. Dr. Lillian Mercer.”
Dylan backed her instantly. “You heard her.”
As they lifted her onto the stretcher, Dylan picked up Grant’s wedding ring from the floor.
He didn’t keep it.
He sealed it in an evidence bag.
Across the city, Grant Whitaker sat at Morrow House restaurant, laughing with Madison Vale under golden lights.
He ignored the calls.
When he finally answered, a paramedic told him:
“Your wife is in emergency transport due to pregnancy complications.”
Grant sighed.
“She’s overreacting,” he said.
Then he hung up.
And returned to his wine.
Emma was rushed toward Mercy General while Dylan held her hand the entire way.
“Did he even sound worried?” she whispered.
“No,” Dylan said.
May you like
That was all.
And in that silence, something irreversible began.
