CHAPTER 3 — Breaking Point (Short Version)

Inside Mercy General, everything moved fast—too fast for fear to settle properly.
Emma Whitaker was rushed into emergency delivery. Her body was weak, her breath uneven, but she stayed conscious just long enough to hear one thing:
“My baby…” she whispered.
Dylan leaned in immediately. “He’s going to be fine. Focus on breathing.”
Dr. Lillian Mercer’s voice cut through the room. “Fetal distress. We’re delivering now.”
Then everything blurred—lights, movement, voices.
And suddenly—
A cry.
Small. Sharp. Alive.
A nurse spoke softly. “It’s a boy.”
Emma exhaled like she had been underwater for hours.
Outside the operating room, Grant Whitaker finally arrived.
But it was too late.
Caleb stood in front of him. Luke beside him.
“He’s here,” Caleb said coldly.
Grant tried to speak. “Is Emma okay?”
Luke answered first. “She survived. That’s not the same thing as you being forgiven.”
Caleb added, “You left her bleeding on a kitchen floor.”
Grant froze. “I didn’t know it was that serious—”
Luke cut in. “That’s the problem. You didn’t care enough to know.”
A nurse passed them carrying a sealed bag.
Inside it—Grant’s wedding ring.
He stared at it, silent.
In recovery, Emma held her newborn son for the first time.
“Liam,” she whispered. “His name is Liam.”
Dylan nodded. “Good.”
Her eyes drifted toward the door. “Is he still here?”
Dylan answered honestly. “Yes.”
A pause.
Then Emma said quietly, “I don’t want him near me.”
And Dylan simply replied, “Then he won’t be.”
Outside, Grant was told to leave.
No arguments mattered anymore.
May you like
He walked out of Mercy General alone.
Inside, Emma stayed with her son—safe, exhausted, and finally no longer waiting for someone who never came.
