Chapter 4 - The Fall of the ProdigyInside the grand ballroom, the applause was deafening.

Arthur Sterling raised his glass high, his voice booming through the state-of-the-art sound system.

"Ladies and gentlemen, tonight marks a new era for Sterling Global! As we finalize our multi-million-dollar federal defense contract renewal, we need leaders of absolute vision, impeccable integrity, and unmatched operational genius!"

The crowd cheered, champagne flutes glinting in the crystal light.

Ethan Cole stood tall beside the podium, feeling like a god. He glanced out over the sea of wealthy investors, senators, and corporate titans. He saw his future mapped out before him—endless power, immense wealth, and a social standing that nothing could ever touch. He spared a brief, dismissive thought for Ava sitting alone in the dark house in Cedar Ridge, probably crying over her burnt dress. Pathetic, he thought. Some people are simply born to be left behind.

"It is my absolute honor," Arthur Sterling continued, beaming as he gestured toward Ethan, "to officially announce our new Vice President of Operations... Mr. Ethan Cole!"

The spotlight swung violently across the stage, bathing Ethan in a brilliant, blinding white glow.

Cynthia Sterling leaned forward, pressing her lips to his cheek as the crowd rose to their feet in a standing ovation. Ethan stepped up to the microphone, his heart hammering with triumphant adrenaline. He cleared his throat, opening his mouth to deliver the speech he had memorized down to the syllable.

"Thank you, Arthur. Thank you, distinguished guests, board members, and friends..."

He paused, waiting for the applause to die down so his words could echo with maximum dramatic effect.

Instead, the applause died instantly—not because they were listening, but because the massive, twenty-foot LED display screen behind the podium suddenly flickered.

The live camera feed of Ethan’s smiling face vanished.

In its place, the screen flashed a brilliant, blinding crimson warning sign: FEDERAL SEC/DOJ FORENSIC AUDIT ALERT.

A collective gasp sucked the air right out of the ballroom.

Ethan blinked, frowning as he turned around to look at the screen behind him. "There... there seems to be a technical glitch," he stammered into the microphone, forcing a strained chuckle. "A minor IT hiccup, nothing to—"

The screen shifted.

Row after row of financial data began scrolling across the twenty-foot display in stark, unmerciful black-and-white text.

SHELL COMPANY: VANGUARD HOLDINGS LLC. PRIMARY BENEFICIARY: ARTHUR STERLING. SECONDARY ROUTING: ETHAN COLE - OPERATIONS DIRECTOR. EMBEZZLEMENT TOTAL: $42,850,000 IN FEDERAL DEFENSE R&D GRANTS.

The room descended into a cemetery-like silence.

Arthur Sterling dropped his wine glass. It shattered against the polished parquet floor, the red liquid splashing across the hem of his tailored trousers like arterial spray. His face drained of color until he looked like a corpse.

"Turn that off!" Arthur roared, his voice cracking with panic as he lunged toward the AV controls. "Turn that screen off right now! It’s a hack! It’s a malicious cyber-attack!"

The data didn't stop. In fact, it zoomed in.

High-resolution scanned documents appeared on the screen, bearing the unmistakable, legally binding electronic signatures of Arthur Sterling and—right beside it, clear as day—Ethan Cole’s personal corporate sign-off approving the fraudulent fund transfers.

Whispers erupted into screams of outrage. Investors stood up, shoving their chairs back. Journalists vaulted over tables, their camera shutters firing like rapid-fire machine guns, capturing every bead of sweat rolling down Ethan’s pale, terrified face.

"Ethan..." Cynthia whispered, taking a sudden, violent step away from him as if he were carrying a contagious disease. "What is this? What the hell is this?!"

"Cynthia, wait—it's fake! It's completely fabricated!" Ethan shouted, his voice pitching up into an undignified shriek. He grabbed the edges of the podium, his knuckles turning chalk-white. "It’s a glitch! Lies! All of it is lies!"

"Not a lie, Mr. Cole."

The calm, clear voice cut through the roaring chaos of the ballroom like a knife through silk.

At the back of the room, the heavy double doors pushed open.

A woman walked slowly down the center aisle, stepping out from the shadows into the golden glow of the chandeliers.

She wore a heavy charcoal wool coat, her posture ramrod straight, her expression an absolute mask of chilling, untouchable composure. As she walked, the crowd parted before her instinctively, sensing the terrifying aura of absolute power radiating from her steps.

Ethan froze, his eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated horror as the woman approached the stage.

It wasn't a federal marshal in riot gear.

It was Ava.
