Chapter 6 - The House by the RiverThree months later, the spring humidity of Virginia had given way to the deep, golden warmth of early summer.

The house in Cedar Ridge was gone. Well, not gone physically, but entirely transformed. The mortgage had been liquidated as part of Ethan’s federal asset forfeiture settlement, and the property had been purchased at auction by an independent architectural firm.
Ethan Cole was currently residing in a six-by-nine-foot concrete cell at a federal correctional facility in Terre Haute, Indiana, awaiting a projected twenty-five-year sentence without the possibility of parole. Sterling Global had dissolved into bankruptcy, its assets liquidated to pay back federal restitution, and Arthur Sterling was awaiting trial under house arrest.
And Ava Vance?
Ava stood on the wraparound porch of a stunning, modern glass-and-timber home perched high on a scenic bluff overlooking the blue waters of the Blue Ridge mountains.
The air was clean, smelling of pine needles, wild honeysuckle, and absolute freedom.
She wore a crisp white linen shirt and comfortable denim jeans, her bare feet propped up on a wooden railing. In her hand, she held a porcelain mug of hot black coffee.
Across the wide wooden deck, an office assistant from her newly established private forensic accounting firm—Vance & Associates—stepped out onto the porch holding a leather-bound folio.
"Morning, boss," the young man said with a smile. "The Department of Defense compliance audit files just came through. They want to retain our services for the entire mid-Atlantic defense infrastructure review."
Ava smiled, taking a slow sip of her coffee. "Tell them our retainer fee has doubled."
"Done," the assistant laughed, walking back inside.
Ava turned her gaze toward the horizon, watching the morning sun break over the majestic peaks of the mountains. The memory of the scorched blue dress in the backyard grill felt like a lifetime ago—a distant, insignificant campfire from a journey she had finally survived.
She didn't cry into the kitchen sink. She didn't stay behind.

She had walked into the fire, taken back her life, and burned an entire empire to the ground—proving once and for all that a woman who builds your success can just as easily dismantle it.
Ava smiled, took another sip of her coffee, and stepped forward into her bright, unwritten future.
