Chapter 6 - The Dawn After the Storm

Three years later, the coast of Maine looked like an oil painting brought to life.
The salt breeze carried the crisp scent of pine and ocean spray across the wraparound porch of a modest, shingle-style farmhouse overlooking the rocky cliffs of Acadia. The house was painted a soft slate blue, with flower boxes overflowing with bright yellow marigolds and white petunias.
Charlotte sat in a wooden rocking chair, her bare feet propped up on the porch railing, sipping hot chamomile tea.
Footsteps crunched lightly on the gravel pathway leading up from the cove.
“Mommy! Mommy, look what I found!”
A three-year-old girl with wild dark curls and bright, fearless eyes came sprinting around the corner of the porch, holding up a shiny green crab shell like it was the crown jewel of an empire.
Charlotte laughed, setting her tea down and kneeling on the wooden boards to scoop Maya into her arms, spinning her around until the little girl shrieked with pure, unadulterated joy.
“A crab shell, huh? Did you ask permission before you took it from his beach house?” Charlotte teased, kissing her daughter’s freckled cheek.
“He wasn't using it!” Maya declared seriously, making Charlotte laugh again.
As Maya ran off toward the garden to show her treasure to the golden retriever dozing by the steps, Charlotte stood up and looked out toward the endless, sapphire expanse of the Atlantic Ocean.
The sun was climbing high into the clear blue sky, warming her face and casting a golden glow over the tranquil landscape.
Her phone buzzed quietly on the porch table. She picked it up. It was an email notification from her publisher. Her new book—a forensic memoir detailing the collapse of corporate corruption from the inside—was officially sitting at number one on the New York Times bestseller list.
She didn't feel a rush of arrogance or the cold, hollow thrill of power that Grant had chased his entire life. Instead, she felt something infinitely more valuable.
Peace.

She was her own person. She owned her time, her heart, and her future.
Charlotte looked back down at the shimmering ocean, smiled softly, and walked inside to make pancakes for breakfast, leaving the ghosts of Manhattan far behind where they belonged.
