Chapter 3 - The Boardroom at NorthstarThe executive conference room on the thirty-fifth floor of the Northstar Dynamics tower offered a breathtaking, panoramic view of a grey, freezing Chicago skyline.

At precisely 8:55 a.m., Ethan Cole straightened his tie, smoothed down his lapels, and checked his reflection in the dark glass of the boardroom table. Beside him sat his mother, Claire, who had insisted on accompanying him to "ensure the optics were correct for the investors."
Across the table, Adrian Mercer leaned back in his leather chair, tapping a gold fountain pen against his notepad with an air of absolute boredom.
"Remember, Ethan," Adrian murmured, not looking up. "The majority stakeholder—the entity controlling Northstar’s venture fund—is notoriously reclusive. They operate under a blind trust called Apex Holdings. Rumor has it, they’re backed by old-money industrialists from the East Coast. If they ask about your supply chain margins, let me handle the numbers. You’re the visionary; I’m the executioner."
Ethan nodded, feeling a slight twitch in his jaw. Despite his success last night, a nagging sense of unease gnawed at the back of his mind. He kept thinking about Madison tearing up that twenty-five-thousand-dollar check. He kept remembering the way she had looked at him before walking out into the rain—not with anger, but with a profound, terrifying clarity.
Forget her, Ethan told himself. She’s a ghost from a life I’ve outgrown.
At 9:00 a.m. sharp, the heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung open.
The corporate legal team from Northstar filed in first, followed by three corporate security guards in dark suits. But it wasn't the lawyers who caught everyone’s attention.
It was the woman walking at the center of the procession.
She wore an impeccably tailored navy blue Chanel pantsuit that fit her athletic frame with terrifying precision. Her dark hair was pulled back into a sleek, flawless chignon, and a pair of tinted designer sunglasses hid her eyes. In her hand, she carried a slim, black leather briefcase embossed with a gold monogram that made Adrian Mercer instantly drop his fountain pen.
MH.
Ethan stood up automatically, his mouth parting in sheer, unadulterated disbelief.
"M-Madison?" he stammered, taking a half-step forward from his chair.
Claire clutched her pearls, her face draining of all color. "What is she doing here? Security! How did a delivery girl get past the lobby security?!"
None of the security guards moved. In fact, the lead guard stepped forward, snapping a crisp salute toward the woman at the head of the table.
Madison didn't look at Ethan. She didn't look at Claire.
She walked slowly, with the unshakeable grace of absolute power, to the high-backed leather chair at the absolute head of the table—the seat reserved exclusively for the Managing Director and Majority Shareholder of Apex Holdings and Northstar Dynamics.
She pulled out the chair, sat down, and slowly removed her sunglasses.
Her eyes—cold, brilliant, and entirely unrecognizing—swept across the stunned faces of the men who had mocked her twelve hours earlier.
"Sit down, Mr. Cole," Madison said. Her voice was ice-cold, devoid of any warmth, carrying the quiet authority of a queen addressing her subjects.
Ethan’s knees felt weak. He slowly sank back into his chair, his voice cracking. "M-Madison... I don't understand. What is this? Are you... are you working here?"
Adrian Mercer, recovering from his initial shock, forced a nervous, arrogant laugh. He leaned forward, looking at Madison with patronizing disbelief.
"Excuse me, young lady," Adrian said, flashing a dismissive smile. "I don't know what kind of prank this is, or how you managed to wander up from the loading dock, but this is a closed executive session of Northstar Dynamics. Security, escort this—"
"Mr. Mercer," Madison interrupted softly.
She didn't raise her voice, yet the single syllable cracked across the boardroom like a whip.
She opened her leather briefcase, pulled out a thick stack of legal documents, and slid them across the polished mahogany table toward Adrian.
"Read page four," Madison commanded.
Adrian frowned, picking up the document. His eyes scanned the first paragraph, and the color instantly drained entirely from his face. His hands began to shake so violently that the paper rustled loudly in the silent room.
"This... this isn't possible," Adrian whispered, staring at the signature at the bottom of the page.
"What does it say, Adrian?" Ethan demanded, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. "What is that?!"
Adrian swallowed hard, looking up at Madison as if he were staring face-to-face with a ghost.
"Apex Holdings... isn't an independent trust," Adrian choked out, his voice trembling. "It’s a wholly-owned subsidiary of... of Hale Industries."
The room went dead silent.
Claire Cole gasped, clutching her chest. "Hale... Hale Industries? The energy monopoly? Twelve billion dollars?"
May you like
Madison leaned forward, resting her elbows on the table, her fingers interlaced. Her dark eyes locked onto Ethan, who looked as though he had just been struck by lightning.
"Good morning, Ethan," Madison said, her tone dripping with icy sarcasm. "You wanted to enter a different life. You wanted investors, international conferences, and billionaires. So, I thought I’d introduce you to my family."
