Chapter 4 - The Dissolution of a PatentEthan stood up so fast his chair tipped over backward, crashing loudly against the oak floor.

"No," Ethan breathed, shaking his head frantically. "No, that’s... that’s a lie. You delivered food on a scooter! You lived in a two-room apartment above a bakery! You wore thrift-store clothes!"

"I wore thrift-store clothes because I chose to, Ethan," Madison said calmly, picking up a silver pen and twirling it between her fingers. "You wore an expensive suit tonight because someone else bought it for you. There is a fundamental difference."

"You... you lied to me," Claire shrieked, standing up and pointing a trembling finger at Madison. "You deceived my son! You pretended to be a poor nobody just to trap him!"

Madison’s gaze snapped toward Claire, and the sheer, glacial fury in her eyes made the older woman recoil instantly.

"Trap him?" Madison laughed—a short, humorless sound. "Mrs. Cole, for five years, I paid his rent when he couldn't afford groceries. I covered his mother’s medical bills when her insurance lapsed. When his university grant was rejected, I was the one who funneled five hundred thousand dollars of my own private trust into his laboratory through an anonymous legal proxy."

She stood up, walking slowly around the table toward Ethan, who stood frozen like a statue.

"Every breakthrough he made, every component he soldered, every night he cried into his coffee because he thought he was a failure—I was the one holding him up," Madison whispered, stopping inches from him. "And last night, in front of your precious investors, your son looked me in the eyes and told me I wasn't good enough for his new life because I smelled like restaurant kitchens."

Ethan’s throat felt entirely closed. He looked down at Madison—really looked at her—and realized with horrifying clarity that the woman standing before him was not the broken, weeping girl who had walked out into the rain twelve hours ago.

She was the owner of his entire existence.

"Madison... please," Ethan whispered, his voice cracking with desperation. "I was... I was blinded by the pressure. The board, the media, the money... it went to my head. But we built this together. You said so yourself! You love me!"

Madison tilted her head, her expression completely devoid of emotion.

"I did love you, Ethan," she said quietly. "Not because of your patents, and not because of your potential. But because I thought you had integrity. I thought that if you ever achieved success, you would remain the man who sat on a cold curb outside a laboratory and thanked me for a cup of coffee."

She turned away from him, walking back to her seat at the head of the table.

"Legal," Madison called out.

The chief corporate attorney for Hale Industries stood up immediately. "Yes, Ms. Hale?"

"Initiate Clause 9-B of the primary research acquisition contract," Madison ordered clearly.

The attorney opened a separate folder, reading aloud: "Clause 9-B: In the event of material breach of moral conduct, public defamation, or corporate misalignment by the primary inventor, Hale Industries and Apex Holdings retain the sole, unilateral right to revoke all patent licensing, freeze intellectual property rights, and dissolve the corporate partnership with immediate effect."

"No!" Ethan screamed, lunging toward the table. "You can’t do that! That patent is my life’s work! It’s worth forty million dollars!"

"It was worth forty million dollars when it belonged to Hale Industries' portfolio," Madison corrected coldly, picking up a heavy document stamp. "Now, it’s worth zero."

Bam.

The heavy metal stamp slammed down onto the master contract, stamping a bright, unforgiving red word across the signature line: REVOKED.
