Chapter 4 - The Takeover

The street outside the main warehouse of 'Refacciones Solís' in the affluent San Ángel district was in total chaos when Raúl’s black Jeep Grand Cherokee screeched to a halt, mounting the curb.
A crowd of thirty warehouse workers and administrative staff stood scattered across the sidewalk, whispering anxiously among themselves, some holding cups of coffee, all eyes locked on the massive iron gates of the facility. Stationed directly in front of the gates were two burly security guards in black tactical uniforms, their arms crossed over their chests, their expressions entirely unreadable behind dark sunglasses.
Raúl slammed his car door shut and stormed toward the gate, his chest heaving, his face crimson with rage. "Get out of my way!" he screamed at the guards, reaching for the electronic key fob to open the gate. "This is my property! I am the CEO of this company!"
The guard on the right didn't move an inch. He placed a heavy, gloved hand firmly against Raúl’s chest, pushing him back with an effortless, solid force. "Sir, please step back. This property is under private security protection by order of the majority shareholder. Your access credentials have been revoked."
"Majority shareholder? I am the majority shareholder!" Raúl roared, spit flying from his lips. "My mother is paralyzed! I have her power of attorney!"
"Not anymore, Raúl," a calm, resonant voice sounded from behind the iron bars of the courtyard.
Raúl looked up. Walking slowly across the pristine concrete courtyard was Licenciado Bernardo Gomez, flanked by two active-duty officers from the Mexico City judicial police. Behind them, stepping out of the glass-fronted administrative office, was Claudia.
She looked entirely different from the exhausted, submissive woman he had kicked out twelve hours ago. She was wearing a tailored navy-blue blazer that had belonged to Doña Ernestina during her days as a business administrator, her hair pulled back into a flawless, severe bun. In her hand, she held a thick, leather-bound folder.
"Claudia!" Raúl yelled, his hands shaking as he gripped the iron bars of the gate. "What is this sick joke? You think you can steal my business? You think you can use my mother's sickness to launch some kind of legal coup? I’ll have you thrown in prison for fraud!"
Claudia walked up to the gate, her footsteps clicking sharply against the ground. She looked at him through the bars, her eyes entirely devoid of the warmth or love she had shown him for over a decade. There was only an immense, chilling indifference.
"I didn't steal anything, Raúl," Claudia said softly, her voice carrying clearly over the silent crowd of employees on the sidewalk. "Every document here is signed, notarized, and registered with the Public Registry of Commerce. Your general power of attorney expired at exactly 5:00 AM today. Your mother chose not to renew it. Instead, she executed a total revocation of your rights and granted an absolute, irrevocable power of administration to me."
"That’s a lie!" Raúl screamed. "My mother can't sign anything! She’s a vegetable! You forced her thumbprint onto those papers! I’ll file a medical challenge! I’ll have a judge declare her incompetent!"
Licenciado Bernardo stepped forward, pulling a high-definition tablet from his briefcase. He turned the screen toward Raúl. On the display, a video began to play. It showed Doña Ernestina sitting up slightly in her medical bed at Marta’s house, her right eye bright and focused. The camera panned to show a certified medical examiner and a state judge standing beside her. In the video, the judge clearly asks: "Doña Ernestina Solís, do you wish to revoke all administrative powers granted to your son, Raúl Solís, and transfer them entirely to Claudia Carrillo?"
The elderly woman didn't hesitate. She looked directly at the camera and blinked once—a long, profound, and undeniable confirmation. Then, using her left hand with a deliberate, agonizing effort, she pressed her ink-stained thumb firmly onto the legal document held by the judge.
Raúl stared at the screen, the breath completely leaving his lungs. His knees began to shake. "No... no, she couldn't... she loves me... I'm her son..."
"You were her son, Raúl," Claudia said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper that only he could hear through the bars. "Until you looked at her stretcher last night and called her a plant. Until you threw two five-hundred-peso bills at the woman who spent a year cleaning her sores and told us to take a taxi to the street. You thought she couldn't hear you. You thought that because half her body was dead, her soul was dead too."
She turned to the two judicial police officers standing beside her. "Officers, this man is no longer affiliated with 'Refacciones Solís'. He is currently driving a corporate vehicle registered under the company name, and he is in possession of corporate credit cards that have been flagged for unauthorized use."
The lead officer stepped forward, pulling out a pair of handcuffs. "Mr. Raúl Solís, please step away from the gate and place your hands on the hood of the vehicle. We are seizing the Jeep Grand Cherokee by court order, and you are being served with a formal restraining order prohibiting you from approaching this facility, your mother, or Mrs. Claudia Carrillo within a distance of five hundred meters."
From the edge of the crowd, Mónica arrived in a taxi, her hair messy, her makeup smeared from her frantic run from the apartment. She saw the police officers forcing Raúl against the hood of his luxury SUV, searching his pockets and pulling out his gold watch and the corporate key fobs.
"Raúl!" she shrieked, running forward. "What is happening? Tell them to stop! Where is the money for the apartment lease? The landlord said the corporate account bounced!"
Raúl turned his head, his face pressed against the hot metal of the car hood, his eyes locked onto Claudia, who was calmly instructing Don Jorge to open the gates and let the employees back inside to start their shifts.

"Claudia! Please!" Raúl begged, tears of terror finally spilling from his eyes. "We can talk about this! She’s my mother! Half of this store belongs to me by inheritance!"
Claudia didn't even look back. She walked into the administrative building, the glass door closing behind her with a soft, final click.
