Chapter 4 - The Forbidden KissThe dance floor was a vortex of light, shadow, and soft music, but to Clarion, the rest of the world had completely faded away.

Dominico’s hand rested heavily on her waist, pulling her flush against his body as they moved in a perfect, effortless waltz. His other hand held hers tightly, their fingers intertwined.
He was looking down at her with an intensity that felt hotter than fire.
"You shouldn't have done that," Dominico whispered, his voice deep and raspy as he spun her beneath a crystal chandelier. "Gallagher is a rat. He was trying to provoke me into making a scene."
"I know," Clarion replied, holding his intense gaze. "That's why I stopped you. You spent four days building a flawless financial trap to destroy him legally and physically. Knocking his teeth out in the middle of the Drake ballroom would have given his lawyers an assault charge to stall the court foreclosures."
Dominico stared at her, a slow, wondrous expression softening the sharp edges of his handsome face.
"You protected me," he stated softly. It wasn't a question; it was a realization that seemed to stun him to his very core.
"I protected the plan," Clarion corrected softly, though her heart was pounding so hard against her ribs she was certain he could feel it through his tuxedo.
"Liar," Dominico murmured.
Before she could protest, he guided her off the main dance floor, leading her through a set of French doors into a quiet, secluded stone terrace overlooking the dark, rain-swept expanse of Lake Michigan.
The cold night air hit them, carrying the scent of damp earth and distant lake spray. The muffled sound of the orchestra played faintly behind the glass doors.
Clarion walked to the stone balustrade, leaning against it and letting the cool breeze refresh her warm skin. She felt wild, wired on adrenaline, dangerous knowledge, and a terrifying, growing attraction to the man standing behind her.
Dominico walked up behind her, closing the distance until his chest was resting lightly against her bare back. He didn't touch her with his hands, but his presence was an overwhelming wall of heat protecting her from the wind.
"Why are you really doing this, Clarion?" he asked softly near her ear. "You could have run to the police at the Drake. You could have screamed for help in front of two hundred people. You didn't."
Clarion turned around slowly, her back pressing against the stone railing. She looked up into his icy blue eyes, illuminated by the soft moonlight filtering through the storm clouds above.
"Because the police won't bring Julian justice," she whispered, the honesty tearing out of her chest before she could stop it. "The legal system would have taken five years to fight Gallagher's appeals, and he would have bought off three judges along the way. You... you are going to destroy him completely. And after seeing what he did tonight... I want to help you finish it."
Dominico stared down at her. Something fundamental inside him—some heavy, iron cage he had built around his heart since his brother’s death—cracked wide open.
"Clarion," he rasped, his hand rising to cup her cheek, his thumb gently smoothing over her cheekbone.
"Dominico..." she breathed.
It wasn't a planned tactical move. It wasn't a calculated play in their high-stakes game of corporate chess.
Dominico bent his head down, and his lips met hers.
The kiss began as a sudden, desperate hunger—a collision of two powerful forces that had been orbiting each other in a closed room for four days. His mouth was warm, demanding, tasting of vintage wine and dark promises. His arms wrapped around her waist like bands of steel, lifting her slightly off her feet and pulling her flush against his chest.
Clarion let out a soft gasp against his lips, her hands rising instinctively to slide into his thick, dark hair, holding him close.
The world around them vanished. The cold wind, the rain, the syndicate war, the forty million dollars, and the locked doors—everything dissolved into the searing, intoxicating heat of their mouths touching.
It was forbidden. It was dangerous. It went against every rule of self-preservation Clarion had ever lived by.
And it was the most breathtakingly right thing she had ever felt in her life.
When Dominico finally pulled back a fraction of an inch, his breathing was heavy, his forehead resting against hers. His icy eyes were no longer cold—they were ablaze with a dark, terrifying passion.
"I was going to use you," Dominico confessed raspy against her lips, his hands shaking slightly as he held her face. "When Tommy brought you to my house on Tuesday, my plan was simple: force you to build the financial trap, use your brilliant mind to crush Gallagher, and then pay you off and send you far away from Chicago where you couldn't testify against me."
Clarion looked up into his eyes, her heart aching with a sudden, sharp intensity. "And now?"
Dominico pressed a soft, lingering kiss to her forehead, then down to the side of her neck, making her shiver with delight.
"Now," Dominico whispered into her skin, his voice filled with an absolute, terrifying certainty, "I will burn this city to the ground before I let anyone take you away from me. You are mine, Clarion. Not as a captive. Not as a weapon. As my equal."
Before she could answer, the French doors burst open behind them.

Tommy rushed onto the terrace, his face pale, his hand resting inside his jacket on the grip of his sidearm.
"Boss!" Tommy shouted urgently. "We have a massive problem. Gallagher’s men just intercepted the server farm in Rosemont. They know about the Cayman accounts!"
