Chapter 5 - The Siege and the SacrificeThe drive back to the Lake Forest estate was a blur of high-speed evasive maneuvers, sirens in the distance, and Dominico shouting orders into an encrypted satellite phone.

Gallagher hadn't cracked Clarion’s new code—Marcus Vance, his financial director, had physically sent six armed hitmen to raid the commercial server building in Rosemont, cutting the fiber-optic lines in a desperate attempt to freeze all outgoing trades before the midnight market closures in Asia.

"Did they get the core drive?" Dominico demanded into the phone, his arm wrapped securely around Clarion’s shoulders as the Maybach tore through the rain at ninety miles per hour.

"No, boss," his IT chief reported frantically over the speaker. "Miss Hayes set up that automated fail-safe yesterday! The moment the Rosemont lines were severed, the entire primary ledger mirrored itself back to the local server in your estate's library! But Gallagher knows the mirror is at Lake Forest! He’s sending his entire heavy crew there right now to destroy the physical drives!"

Dominico slammed his phone onto the leather seat. "Tommy! How far are the backup teams?"

"Ten minutes behind us, boss!" Tommy shouted from the front seat, checking his rearview mirror as two dark SUVs with tinted windows appeared behind them on the highway. "And we’ve got company on our tail!"

Clarion held onto Dominico’s arm, her mind running through the technical specs of the local server sitting in the basement library.

"If Gallagher’s men destroy those local drives before midnight," Clarion said urgently, looking at Dominico, "the automated trade invoices won't process in Singapore! The twelve million dollars will be locked in limbo, the foreclosures will fail, and Gallagher will keep his docks!"

"I won't let them touch those drives," Dominico said coldly, pulling a sleek black 9mm handgun from a hidden compartment in the leather seat armrest and checking the chamber with practiced, lethal efficiency.

"Dominico, no!" Clarion begged, her hand catching his wrist. "You can't fight an entire hit squad in your library!"

Dominico looked at her, his icy blue eyes softening as he reached out to cup her neck, pulling her close for a hard, quick kiss. "Trust me, my love. I built that house to withstand a siege. Tommy, take the side entrance into the garage! We hold the main hall until the backup arrives!"

The Maybach burst through the iron gates of the Lake Forest estate at 11:15 p.m., skidding across the wet gravel driveway and roaring into the underground garage.

They had barely stepped out of the vehicle when the sound of automatic gunfire echoed from the driveway above. Heavy caliber rounds slammed into the reinforced garage doors, showering sparks across the concrete floor.

"Upstairs! Now!" Dominico ordered, grabbing Clarion’s hand and pulling her through the heavy steel security door leading to the basement library corridors.

The library was quiet, illuminated only by the soft blue glow of the server racks hummed behind a thick pane of bulletproof glass in the far corner.

"Get behind the desk, Clarion!" Dominico commanded, pushing her toward the massive mahogany structure while he and Tommy took defensive positions near the heavy oak entrance doors.

Clarion didn't hide.

She ran directly to the glass server enclosure, using her administrative override card to open the security door. She sat down at the master terminal, her fingers flying across the keyboard like lighting.

"What are you doing?!" Dominico shouted over his shoulder as the heavy oak library doors buckled under a massive kick from outside.

"I’m accelerating the Singapore transfers!" Clarion yelled back, her eyes scanning lines of green code as she manually bypassed the six-hour verification timer. "If I can manually approve the trade invoices now, the money transfers immediately! They can smash the servers all they want after that, and it won't matter!"

BOOM!

The library doors splattered inward in a shower of wood splinters and shattered iron latches.

Four heavily armed men wearing dark tactical gear and ski masks burst into the room, their submachine guns raised.

Dominico stepped into the center of the room like an angry god.

He fired three rapid shots, dropping the lead shooter instantly. Tommy fired from behind a leather armchair, taking down a second man. But two more hitmen rushed the room, spraying blind automatic fire across the antique furniture and glass cabinets.

BRRRRRRT!

A stray burst of bullets shattered the display case near the desk. A flying glass shard sliced across Clarion’s shoulder, leaving a bright line of crimson across her silk dress, but she didn't stop typing.

"Two minutes!" she screamed over the deafening noise of gunfire. "I need two minutes!"

Dominico heard her. He saw the blood on her shoulder, and something inside him exploded into pure, unadulterated fury.

He dropped his tactical cover, stepping directly into the open line of fire. He fired with terrifying, mechanical precision—one shot, two shots, three shots—dropping the third hitman instantly as he advanced across the blood-stained rug.

The final hitman—a massive, scarred man recognized as Gallagher’s chief enforcer, Cormac—raised his weapon directly at the server glass where Clarion was sitting.

"No!" Dominico roared.

Dominico threw himself forward, tackling Cormac to the floor just as the enforcer pulled the trigger. The burst of bullets ricocheted off the concrete floor, shattering a heavy stone vase.

The two men tumbled across the hardwood floor in a brutal, hand-to-hand struggle. Cormac slammed his elbow into Dominico’s ribs, but Dominico didn't feel pain—he grabbed Cormac by the throat, driving him back against the mahogany desk with a force that cracked the heavy wood.

With a final, terrifying roar of vengeance for his brother, Dominico twisted Cormac's neck until a sickening SNAP echoed through the library.

Cormac’s body went limp, dropping to the floor like a sack of stones.

Silence descended on the room, broken only by the crackle of distant gunshots from the driveway as Dominico’s backup teams finally arrived to clear the remaining attackers.

Clarion hit the ENTER key with a final, triumphant slam of her hand.

On the glowing screen, a green dialog box flared to life:

TRANSFER COMPLETE: $40,000,000 ROUTED. ALL DOCK MORTGAGES EXECUTED. FORECLOSURE NOTICES SENT TO COOK COUNTY SHERIFF.

Clarion let out a ragged breath, slumping back in her chair.

Dominico stood in the center of the room, breathing heavily, his hands covered in blood, his tuxedo torn at the shoulder. He turned slowly to look at her.

He saw the green success screen. He saw the blood on her dress.

He dropped his gun, rushing into the server enclosure and dropping to his knees beside her chair.

"Clarion!" he rasped, his hands frantically checking her shoulder, his voice filled with a terrified panic she had never heard in him before. "You’re hurt! God, you’re bleeding!"

Clarion looked at him—at this terrifying, powerful man who was now trembling as he touched her skin—and she smiled, reaching up to wrap her arms around his neck.

"It’s just a scratch, Dominico," she whispered, burying her face into his neck. "We won. The money is gone. Gallagher is finished."

Dominico held her so tightly she could barely breathe, his body shaking as he pressed his face into her hair, kissing her again and again.

"I don't care about the money," Dominico sobbed softly into her hair, shedding his ruthless skin completely in the quiet ruins of his library. "I don't care about Gallagher. I almost lost you... I almost lost you..."

May you like

Clarion pulled back slightly, looking into his icy blue eyes, now filled with real, vulnerable tears.

"You're never going to lose me, Dominico," she said softly, kissing his lips with all the fierce, unyielding love that had taken root in her heart. "You don't get a choice."
