Chapter 6 - The Unwritten ChapterSix months later, the New York headlines were a frenzy of indictments and corporate restructuring. The Viscanti empire had been sanitized, the criminal elements purged, and the shipping lines now moved nothing but legal cargo.

Genevieve had resigned from her paper. She sat at a desk in the office next to Mateo’s, acting as his chief counsel and strategic advisor. The rumors were still flying—people said the "Sinclair-Viscanti" merger was the strangest business deal in the city’s history.
Mateo entered the room, holding two cups of coffee. He set one on her desk. He didn't look like a crime boss anymore; he looked like a CEO.
"The board is ready for the presentation," he said.
Genevieve looked up, a small smile playing on her lips. "Are you nervous?"
"I don't get nervous," he replied. He walked around the desk, his hand resting on the back of her chair. "But I do have one request."
"What’s that?"
"We’re going to be in front of four hundred guests again tonight at the annual charity ball. No masks, no shooters, no betrayals." He leaned down, his voice dropping to that familiar, intense whisper. "And no one will doubt that you’re with me."
Genevieve stood, meeting his gaze. The kiss at the gala had been a lie, a performance of power. This was different. There was no audience tonight, yet the electricity between them felt just as potent.
"I think I can manage that," she said.

As they walked toward the ballroom, hand in hand, the city lights sparkled below them like diamonds. The story she had set out to write had died a long time ago, replaced by a reality that was far more complicated, far more dangerous, and for the first time in her life, exactly where she wanted to be.
She had witnessed the death of a criminal, the birth of a partner, and in the process, she had found that the truth was rarely black and white. It was gray, it was messy, and it was worth everything.
