Chapter 2 - The Warmth Inside the Storm

The interior of the Maybach smelled of cedarwood, aged leather, and expensive espresso. As the heater blasted warm air over my freezing legs, I slumped back against the plush upholstery, shivering violently from the delayed shock of the encounter.

Adrian slid into the seat beside me, closing the heavy door with a satisfying thud. He didn't say a word for the first five minutes as the car glided smoothly out of the freight yard and onto the elevated highway heading downtown.

He reached into a compartment between the seats, pulling out a soft cashmere blanket and draping it over my trembling shoulders.

"Thank you," I muttered, pulling the blanket tight around my chest. I glanced sideways at him. His profile was illuminated by the neon glow of passing city streetlights. "How did you know who I was? I'm just a mid-level auditor. People like you don't know accountants from office furniture."

"People like me know every single person working inside our supply chains," Adrian replied evenly, turning his head to look at me. Up close, his eyes weren't just gray; they held flecks of ice and deep, calculating intelligence. "Especially when they spend eighteen months secretly copying corporate ledger entries to build a RICO case against my primary business rival."

My heart skipped a beat. "You knew?"

"I knew before you downloaded your first file," Adrian said calmly. "I watched you, Claire. I watched you sit at that flickering desk in the south wing, playing the part of the timid, overlooked bookkeeper. I watched you hide your intelligence behind oversized glasses and practical sweaters. And I wondered how long it would take before Vanessa's jackals tried to corner you."

"If you knew, why didn't you stop me? Or stop her?"

"Because I wanted to see what you would do," he said, a faint, intrigued spark crossing his gaze. "Most people run when they smell blood in the water. You stayed. You built a weapon. And tonight, you stood in a freezing yard with two thugs and bluffed your way out of a execution."

He reached into his pocket and handed my phone back to me. The screen was still lit. The timer had been paused.

"Your brother, Ethan, is currently checked into St. Jude’s pediatric ward under an alias paid for by a shell corporation," Adrian continued, his voice dropping into a softer, more serious register. "Vanessa’s men found his file this afternoon. That’s why they were waiting for you at the gate. They were going to use him to force you to hand over the flash drive."

The world seemed to tilt on its axis. The blood drained entirely from my face.

"Ethan..." I choked out, tears finally breaking free and spilling down my cheeks. "Is he... is he safe?"

"As of twenty minutes ago, my personal security detail relocated him to a secure medical suite on the top floor of my private residence," Adrian said. "He’s eating ice cream and playing video games. He’s completely safe."

I stared at him, the walls I had spent a decade building completely shattering. For eighteen months, I had been entirely alone, carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders, terrified every single day that I would fail. And in less than ten minutes, this terrifying mafia titan had stepped out of a snowstorm and dismantled every single threat in my life.

"Why are you doing this, Mr. Vale?" I whispered, my voice breaking. "What do you want from me?"

Adrian leaned closer, the heat radiating off him cutting through the chill in the car. He reached out, his knuckles gently brushing a stray tear from my cheek. His touch was warm, impossibly tender for a man whose name terrified half the state.

"I want the woman who outsmarted Vanessa Crowe," Adrian said softly. "And tonight... I want you to sleep in a bed where nobody will ever threaten you again."
