Chapter 4 - The Gala at the Drake

Four days later, the storm had cleared, leaving Chicago frozen beneath a brilliant winter sun.

In that short span of time, Adrian’s private intelligence network had systematically dismantled three of Vanessa Crowe’s primary financial arteries, freezing her offshore accounts and seizing control of her western freight hubs. But Vanessa was a cornered animal, and a cornered animal is at its most dangerous when it has nothing left to lose.

Which brought us to Saturday night, and the annual Winter Charity Gala at the historic Drake Hotel.

The ballroom was a glittering wonderland of crystal chandeliers, cascading floral arrangements, and hundred-dollar-a-plate champagne. The wealthiest, most powerful, and most dangerous people in Chicago filled the room, laughing, clinking glasses, and trading whispers of alliance and betrayal.

And standing near the center of the room, looking like an absolute queen atop a throne of glass, was Vanessa Crowe.

She wore an emerald-green velvet gown that hugged her tall, slender frame, her dark hair pulled back into an immaculate chignon. When she saw me walk down the grand staircase on Adrian’s arm, her perfectly painted smile faltered for a fraction of a second before hardening into pure, venomous hatred.

I had spent the afternoon with Mrs. Gable and a team of stylists Adrian had quietly dispatched to the estate. The result was a revelation. I wore a sweeping, deep midnight-blue silk gown that flattered my soft curves and rounded figure, my brown hair styled in soft, cascading waves framing my face. The oversized glasses were gone, replaced by contact lenses that made my brown eyes look wide and luminous.

As we descended into the ballroom, every head turned.

"Look at her," a sneering voice drifted across the room from near the champagne tower.

It was Julianna Vance, Vanessa’s chief legal counsel and social attack dog. She stood with a group of elite society wives, staring at me with undisguised contempt.

"Who invited the little bookkeeper from accounts payable?" Julianna laughed loudly enough for half the room to hear. "I suppose when you run out of legitimate business partners, Adrian has to start scraping the bottom of the accounting barrel. Honestly, look at her. She looks entirely out of place in a room like this. A pathetic little mouse playing dress-up in borrowed clothes."

The music seemed to dip for a single second.

Three men standing near the bar—senior syndicate captains loyal to Adrian—instantly shifted their posture, their hands drifting toward their jacket linings.

Vanessa Crowe stepped forward, raising her champagne flute with a razor-sharp smile, her eyes locked onto mine. "Careful, Julianna. Some mice know how to chew through electrical wires. Though I imagine Ms. Bennett will find that high society is a bit too hot for someone used to hiding in the freight yard shadows."

The tension in the ballroom was thick enough to cut with a knife. Thirty-seven of the most dangerous people in Chicago held their breath, waiting to see how Adrian Vale would respond to a public insult directed at his guest.

Adrian didn't raise his voice. He didn't even blink.

He stopped walking, turning his imposing frame completely toward me. The rest of the glittering ballroom simply ceased to exist for him.

He reached out, his warm hand resting securely on the small of my back, drawing me flush against his side. His slate-gray eyes burned down into mine with a fierce, absolute devotion that sent a shockwave through the entire room.

“You’re sleeping beside me tonight,” he said clearly, his voice carrying effortlessly across the silent ballroom.

My heart stopped completely.

Then Adrian leaned down and kissed me.

It wasn't a polite, society-mandated peck on the cheek. It was deep, confident, and utterly consuming—a public declaration that etched my name beside his in the darkest, most powerful ledgers in the city.

The kiss detonated the room.

Julianna dropped her champagne flute, the crystal shattering against the marble floor. Vanessa’s face twisted in absolute horror as she realized that I wasn't just a witness anymore—I was untouchable.
