Chapter 4 - The Midnight AmbushTwo weeks before the wedding deadline, the velvet illusion of high-society safety shattered into violence.

It happened on a rainy Tuesday night. Massimo and Livia were riding in the backseat of a bulletproof Mercedes limousine, returning from an emergency meeting with the dockworkers' union at the Port of Ostia.

Suddenly, the sleek car shuddered violently as a heavy black SUV slammed broadside into their passenger door, spinning the limousine across the slick asphalt of the coastal highway.

“Ambush!” the driver screamed, drawing his pistol, but before he could fire, a second vehicle blocked their path from the front.

Glass exploded inward. Heavy-caliber gunfire chewed through the car’s armored plating with terrifying speed.

Massimo didn't hesitate. Adrenaline surged through his veins. He threw himself over Livia, shielding her slender body with his own as bullets ricocheted off the leather interior.

“Get down!” Massimo roared, his heart hammering against his ribs.

“Massimo, look out!” Livia yelled, her voice sharp with sudden panic, not for herself, but for him.

Through the shattered front windshield, a masked gunman was stepping out of the SUV, raising an automatic rifle directly toward the backseat window where Massimo’s head was exposed.

Before Massimo could react, Livia moved with shocking, calculated speed. She reached down into the hidden compartment beneath the limousine’s armrest—a compartment Massimo didn't even know existed—and pulled out a heavy Beretta pistol with suppressed precision.

Bang.

The gunshot echoed deafeningly inside the cramped cabin.

Through the cracked glass, the masked gunman dropped his rifle and collapsed onto the wet pavement, shot cleanly through the shoulder.

Massimo stared at her, his jaw dropping. “You... you know how to shoot?”

“My father wasn't just a bodyguard, Massimo,” Livia said coldly, her eyes scanning the darkness outside with the chilling focus of a tactical commander. “He trained me before Enzo’s associates had him killed. Now, shut up and keep your head down while I call our extraction team.”

Within three minutes, the private security detail Carlo had secretly assigned to Livia—men Massimo didn't even know existed—descended upon the highway like ghosts, neutralizing the remaining attackers and securing the perimeter.

As the sirens wailed in the distance, Massimo pulled Livia into his arms in the back of the smoking limousine, checking her frantically for injuries.

“Are you hurt? Did any glass touch you?” he demanded, his voice cracking with a raw, desperate fear he had never felt in his entire life.

Livia looked up at him, her chest rising and falling heavily. For the first time since he had met her, the armor slipped. Her amber eyes softened, revealing the profound vulnerability beneath the steel intelligence.

“I’m fine, Massimo,” she whispered, her fingers resting against his cheek. “Are you?”

Massimo looked down at her—the quiet, plain orphan everyone had mocked, who had just saved his life with a pistol and a cold heart. The last remnants of his spoiled, arrogant pride evaporated into the Roman night.

He cupped her face with both hands and kissed her.

It wasn't a political kiss for the cameras. It was fierce, desperate, and absolute. Livia gasped softly against his lips before wrapping her arms around his neck, returning the kiss with a matching fire that burned away all the years of silence and shadows.
