Chapter 2 - The Mask Shatters

Amelia pulled back as far as his grip would allow, her chest heaving as she held the crying twins close. The betrayal in her eyes was sharp enough to cut through Victor's lingering arrogance.

“You were pretending,” she breathed, her voice dropping into a register of utter disgust. “You lay there... testing me? While your children were terrified?”

“Amelia,” Victor rasped, pushing himself up onto one elbow despite the searing pain in his shoulder and back. “The envelope. What were you talking about? What does Julian have to do with Sarah?”

Amelia didn't answer. She stood up abruptly, scooping Evan onto her hip while Nora buried her face into Amelia's neck. She looked down at Victor with a coldness that mirrored his own from an hour ago.

“You told me an hour ago that I am staff,” Amelia said, her voice terrifyingly calm. “Staff doesn't owe you confessions. Staff does her job and takes her pay.”

She turned on her heel to walk back toward the grand stairs, but Victor forced himself off the floor. His knee nearly gave out, but he caught the heavy carved banister, wincing through the pain.

“Amelia, stop!” he commanded.

She paused at the third step, not bothering to look back.

“I read Sarah’s toxicology reports from two years ago,” Victor blurted out, the words tearing from his throat. He had never spoken of that night to anyone in this house. “The police said it was an accident. Brake failure on the cliff road.”

Amelia slowly turned her head. Her expression wasn't one of shock—it was filled with a bitter, tragic pity.

“The police report was bought and paid for, Mr. Hale,” Amelia said softly. “Sarah didn't crash because her brakes failed. She crashed because she discovered what Julian was doing to Hale Enterprises... and what he intended to do to you once those babies were born.”

Victor took a slow step forward, his hand extending slightly toward the envelope still held tightly in her fingers. “Give it to me.”

“No,” Amelia said firmly. “Not until you listen to me as a father, not as a boss.”

Victor stopped. For the first time in his adult life, the formidable Victor Hale felt small. The cold, impenetrable fortress he had constructed around his heart after Sarah’s death felt like a cage of straw. He looked at his children—their tear-stained faces, their tiny fingers clinging desperately to Amelia’s sweater—and realized with horrifying clarity that he had been an absentee ghost in his own home.

“I’m listening,” Victor said, his voice dropping into an earnest, raw tone she had never heard from him before. “Please, Amelia. I’m listening.”

Amelia descended the steps slowly. She walked over to the velvet sofa in the main living room, sitting down gently to soothe the children. Victor followed, sitting opposite her, his tall frame bent forward, elbows on his knees, watching her every move.

She placed the cream envelope on the marble coffee table between them.

“Sarah was my twin sister,” Amelia began, her eyes fixed on the paper. “When she married you, I stayed out of the spotlight because I was finishing my medical degree abroad. She was so happy at first, Victor. She loved you. But toward the end, you withdrew into your work. You left her alone in this giant house.”

Victor flinched. The truth stung far deeper than any physical injury.

“Julian took advantage of your absence,” Amelia continued. “He approached Sarah, offering ‘comfort’ and ‘support.’ But when she rejected his advances, he tried to blackmail her using forged documents that implied she was selling Hale Enterprises’ trade secrets to rival firms. When Sarah threatened to bring those papers directly to you, her car went off the road three nights later.”

Victor’s hands clenched into tight fists until his knuckles turned ghost-white. “Why didn’t she tell me?”

“Because she was terrified of what you would do—or worse, that you wouldn't believe her,” Amelia said, tears finally spilling down her cheeks again. “Julian had spent months convincing her that you only viewed her as an asset, a trophy wife to complete your image. And looking at how you’ve lived the past two years... can you honestly say he was wrong?”

The room went completely still. The silence stretched between them, heavy with years of unspoken tragedy and misdirected bitterness.

Victor reached out and took the cream envelope. His fingers shook as he unsealed it. Inside were bank ledgers, offshore transfer receipts bearing Julian’s private signature, and a copy of Sarah’s original, unedited autopsy report—showing traces of a potent sedative in her system at the time of the crash.

At the very bottom of the stack was a legal guardianship document.

Victor’s eyes scanned the final page. “What is this?”

“Sarah gave me custody papers before she died, naming me as a contingent guardian in the event of her death,” Amelia explained quietly. “I didn't enforce them after she died because I hoped you would step up and be the father those babies needed. I took the job as their nanny under my middle name to protect them from afar... to watch Julian.”

She looked Victor directly in the eyes.

“I was going to leave tonight, Victor. I was going to hand you those documents and walk away because I couldn't bear to watch you treat these children like line items on a balance sheet anymore. But then I realized... if I leave, Julian will eventually take them from you. And you won't even see it coming.”
