Chapter 6 - Welcome Home

Six months later.

The summer sun beamed down on the sprawling manicured lawns of the Hale estate. The dark, cold glass walls that once made the mansion feel like a mausoleum had been replaced with warm, sunlit terraces, filled with blooming white roses and colorful children's play sets.

Laughter echoed across the gardens.

Two-and-a-half-year-old Evan was chasing a golden retriever puppy across the grass, while little Nora sat on a picnic blanket, happily babbling as she stacked wooden blocks into chaotic little towers.

Victor stood on the patio, watching them with a quiet, contented smile. He was dressed casually in a linen shirt and dark trousers—the sharp, defensive business suits had been permanently retired for weekend family days.

Behind him, soft footsteps approached.

Amelia walked out onto the patio, wearing a simple yellow summer dress that caught the soft breeze. Her dark hair fell over her shoulders, and her cheeks were bright with health and happiness. Over the past six months, with top medical care and the complete removal of the stress that had burdened her for years, her cardiac health had fully recovered.

Victor turned, his face instantly softening as he reached out to wrap an arm around her waist, pulling her against his side.

“Are they exhausting you yet?” Amelia asked with a laugh, looking out at the kids.

“Never,” Victor smiled, pressing a gentle kiss against her temple. “Although Evan inherits his stubbornness entirely from his mother’s side of the family.”

“Hey! Sarah was very sensible,” Amelia teased, nudging his ribs.

“I wasn't talking about Sarah,” Victor whispered playfully, looking down at her with glowing warmth.

Amelia’s heart fluttered, just as it did every single day since that terrifying night.

Victor reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box. Amelia’s breath caught in her throat.

He didn't drop to one knee in a grand, dramatic gesture. He simply took her right hand in his, opening the box to reveal a stunning, elegant emerald-cut diamond ring that caught the sunlight in brilliant flashes.

“Victor...” she breathed.

“Six months ago, I was a bitter, empty man hiding behind money and arrogance,” Victor said, his voice dropping into a sincere, emotional whisper. “I thought my life was over when I lost Sarah. But then you walked into this house. You protected my children, you brought light into these dark rooms, and you taught me how to be a real human being again.”

He slid the ring gently onto her finger. It fit perfectly.

“You aren't staff, Amelia,” Victor said, looking deeply into her eyes. “You never were. You are the heart of this family. You are my home. Will you marry me?”

Tears of pure joy overflowed from Amelia’s gray eyes. She lifted her face and kissed him—a deep, passionate kiss filled with years of healing, love, and shared hope for the future.

“Yes,” Amelia whispered against his lips. “Yes, Victor. A thousand times yes.”

Down on the lawn, little Evan yelled happily as the puppy knocked over Nora’s block tower, causing the little girl to burst into squeals of delight.

Victor and Amelia walked hand in hand down the stone steps toward their children, leaving the ghosts of the past far behind them, stepping together into the warmth of the life they had built.
