Chapter 2 - The Velvet Trap

The penthouse medical suite smelled of sterilized linen and expensive eucalyptus. Two top-tier pediatricians, summoned instantly by hotel security, worked with quiet efficiency to check Daniel’s vitals, administer a warm intravenous saline drip, and wrap him in thermal blankets.

Within an hour, Daniel’s color had returned to normal, his breathing deepened into peaceful, medicine-induced sleep, and Ava had fallen asleep on a velvet sofa with a cup of hot cocoa in her hands.

Ivy sat beside Daniel’s bed, her fingers intertwined with his small, warm hand, her eyes fixed on the heart monitor as it beeped in steady, reassuring rhythms.

The door to the private study adjoining the medical room opened quietly. Brian stepped out, holding a glass of scotch he hadn't touched. He walked over, standing a few feet behind Ivy, his shadow stretching across the polished floorboards.

“He’s going to be fine, Ivy,” Brian said, using her first name for the very first time. The sound of it on his lips sent a strange, electric shiver down her spine.

Ivy didn't look up. Her shoulders were tense, defensive, braced for the inevitable blow that always seemed to follow any moment of peace in her life. “Are you going to fire me now?”

Brian frowned, stepping closer. “Fire you? After what my own employee did to your son under this roof? Why would I fire you?”

“Because people like me don't belong in places like this,” Ivy whispered bitterly, her voice cracking. “We cause trouble. We bring drama. That’s what my sister said. That’s what everyone always says.”

“Your sister is a criminal who is currently being processed by my legal team,” Brian said, his voice dropping into a register of absolute finality. “She will never step foot near you or your children again.”

Ivy finally lifted her head, turning to look at him. Up close, without the rushing chaos of the lobby or the terror of the freezer, she could finally study his face. The dark hair, the sharp cheekbones, the intense, searching gaze. A strange, phantom memory flickered at the edge of her consciousness—a rainy night seven years ago, a hotel hallway, a man who had been drugged, disoriented, and desperately asking for help.

She shook her head, dismissing the thought as an impossible coincidence. Men like Brian Winston didn't stumble into damp hotel corridors looking like lost angels.

“Why are you doing this, Mr. Winston?” Ivy asked, her voice trembling. “Why are you helping us? You don't even know us.”

Brian stared at her for a long, agonizing moment. He wanted to tell her about the ice cream shop. He wanted to tell her about his mother, Senator Eleanor Winston, who had already quietly commissioned a private DNA lab to verify what her instincts had screamed at her the moment she saw Daniel’s face. He wanted to tell her that the genetic results were scheduled to arrive on his desk within the hour.

Instead, he kept his voice level.

“Some debts can't be ignored, Ivy,” Brian said cryptically. “Get some rest. You and the children are staying in the penthouse tonight. My mother is on her way.”

Before Ivy could process what he meant by his mother, the penthouse double doors swung open, and Senator Eleanor Winston swept into the room like an aristocratic storm, her cream-colored coat swaying around her ankles, her eyes burning with a fierce, unmistakable fire.
