Chapter 3 - The Senator's Decree

Senator Eleanor Winston did not look like a woman who had spent her morning in legislative committee meetings. She looked like a matriarch protecting her newly discovered tribe.

Her gaze swept past Brian, past the medical equipment, and landed squarely on Ivy, who instinctively stood up from her chair, shielding Daniel with her body.

“Eleanor, please,” Brian cautioned, stepping forward. “Give her some space. She’s had a horrific day.”

Eleanor ignored her son entirely. She walked straight toward Ivy, her diamond earrings catching the penthouse lights, her expression softening into something so profound and tender that Ivy’s defensive walls momentarily crumbled.

“My dear,” Eleanor said, her voice shaking slightly as she reached out and gently touched Ivy’s arm. “I am Eleanor. Brian’s mother. And I am so, so sorry for the cruelty you and your precious children have endured under our roof.”

Ivy blinked, completely disoriented. “I don't... I don't understand.”

Eleanor reached into her tailored leather handbag and pulled down a sealed manila envelope bearing the letterhead of New York’s most prestigious genetic testing institute. She placed it gently on the bedside table, right beside Daniel’s sleeping hand.

“When we met at the ice cream shop a few days ago, my grandson lost his tooth,” Eleanor began, her voice steady and clear. “And my maternal instincts—honed by a lifetime of knowing my son—recognized a Winston profile instantly.”

Ivy’s breath hitched. She looked from Eleanor to Brian, whose jaw was clenched tight, watching her with a gaze full of unspoken emotion.

“I had the lab run an expedited sequence,” Eleanor continued, opening the envelope and revealing the official report. “99.999% probability of paternity. Daniel James Austin is Brian Winston’s son.”

The room seemed to tilt on its axis.

Ivy stumbled backward, her hip hitting the edge of the medical cart. “No. That’s... that’s impossible. You’re mistaken.”

“I am never mistaken about my blood, Miss Austin,” Eleanor said firmly, stepping closer but keeping her tone gentle. “Seven years ago. A private cleaning shift at this very hotel. A man disoriented, struggling against a spiked drink in the executive suite hallway. Do you remember?”

The phantom memory exploded into brilliant, blinding clarity.

Ivy’s hands flew to her mouth. The dark hair, the sharp cheekbones, the voice breaking on the same warning—“You need to leave. Someone drugged me. I don’t want to hurt anyone. Please, go.”

She had stayed. She had helped him. And in the morning, terrified of the consequences, she had vanished before he ever woke up.

She had spent six years raising twins in poverty, working until her wrists ached, skipping meals so Daniel and Ava could eat, never once imagining that the stranger from that stormy night was the heir to the most powerful empire in New York.

“Brian...” Ivy whispered, her eyes locking onto his tall, silent figure.

Brian closed the distance between them, his movements slow and deliberate, as if approaching a frightened deer. He stopped just inches away from her, his dark eyes shimmering with unshed tears.

“I’ve spent the last six years wondering who helped me that night,” Brian said, his voice thick with emotion. “Wondering who the kind soul was who stayed when everyone else would have run. And all this time... my children were living in the same city, fighting for survival, while I had everything.”

He looked down at Daniel, then back at Ivy.

“You raised them alone,” Brian said, his voice trembling with awe. “You gave them everything when you had nothing. You are the strongest, bravest woman I have ever met.”

Before Ivy could process the tidal wave of emotions crashing over her, the penthouse doors burst open again.

Security Chief Vance stepped inside, holding a glowing tablet. “Mr. Winston, we’ve intercepted communications from Michelle Austin. She’s currently attempting to liquidate your corporate properties through a forged signature, and she’s speaking to a tabloid reporter.”

Brian’s tender expression vanished in a millisecond, replaced once more by the cold, merciless titan of industry.

“Let her speak to whoever she wants,” Brian said softly, his voice cutting like a razor. “By sunrise, Michelle Austin won't just be broke. She will be facing federal prison for corporate fraud, identity theft, and extortion.”
