Chapter 4 - The Boardroom ExecutionAt precisely 1:27 PM, the atmosphere inside the fourteenth floor of Apex National Insurance shattered into complete chaos.

The double glass doors of the main lobby swung open, and four towering men in tailored dark suits stepped into the office. They moved with absolute tactical precision, taking up defensive positions near the elevators and the main exits.
Behind them walked Matteo Kane.
He wore a dark charcoal double-breasted suit, a crisp black shirt, and a dark silk tie. His razor-sharp scar stood out starkly against his stern brow, and his cold gray eyes swept across the open-plan office like a hurricane locating its target.
Every telephone conversation in the room abruptly stopped. Keyboard clacking ceased. Thirty corporate employees stared in absolute, terrified silence as the most feared man in Chicago walked through their office cubicles.
Maggie stood beside her desk, her heart pounding against her ribs.
Matteo didn't look at the staring employees. His eyes locked directly onto Maggie, softening for a fraction of a second as he approached her desk.
"Matteo," she whispered, her voice caught in her throat. "You brought an army."
"I brought a legal team and security," Matteo corrected smoothly, gesturing toward a sharp-looking man in a three-piece suit holding a leather briefcase behind him. "Where is Mr. Vance?"
Before Maggie could answer, the glass door of the corner office flew open. Richard Vance marched out, his face red with anger, entirely oblivious to the identity of the man standing in his office.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Vance yelled, striding toward Maggie's desk. "Doyle, who are these people? Security! Call building security immediately!"
Matteo slowly turned his head to look at Vance.
The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees instantly.
Vance stopped in his tracks five feet away. As his eyes registered the broad frame, the scarred eyebrow, and the icy gray eyes of Matteo Kane, the color drained from his face so quickly he looked like he was about to faint.
"Mr... Mr. Kane," Vance stammered, his voice cracking violently. "I... I didn't know you were visiting our offices today."
"You are Richard Vance," Matteo stated flatly, stepping forward until he loomed over the smaller man.
"Yes, sir," Vance squeaked, wiping a sudden bead of sweat from his upper lip. "How can Apex National serve the Kane Enterprise today?"
Matteo reached out, casually picking up the heavy Riverfront Logistics folder from Maggie’s desk. He flipped through the pages with terrifying calm before tossing it back onto the wood.
"Miss Doyle informed me that you ordered her to approve a six-million-dollar fraudulent claim for Riverfront Logistics," Matteo said softly.
Vance’s eyes darted frantically toward Maggie, a flash of panicked hatred in his gaze. "She... she misunderstood, Mr. Kane! It’s a complex corporate matter! Miss Doyle is just a junior investigator—"
"Miss Doyle is the most intelligent investigator in this building," Matteo interrupted, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying growl that echoed across the silent floor. "And Riverfront Logistics is an illegal Valetti operation designed to funnel money into an illegal weapons ring that operates directly against my logistics network."
Vance swallowed hard, looking like he was about to vomit. "I... I had no idea—"
"You had every idea," Matteo said flatly. He gestured to the sharp-looking attorney beside him. "This is Marcus Vance—no relation to you, thankfully. He is the head of my corporate legal team. He has spent the last ten minutes filing a formal report with the State Insurance Commissioner, detailing your personal offshore bank account in the Cayman Islands, which received a fifty-thousand-dollar transfer from Salieri Valetti two nights ago."
Vance’s knees buckled. He grabbed the edge of a cubicle wall to keep from falling to the floor. "Please, Mr. Kane... don't destroy me..."
Matteo stepped closer, leaning down until his face was inches from Vance's ear.
"You are fired from this firm," Matteo whispered, his voice smooth as silk and cold as grave dirt. "You will pack your personal belongings into a paper box within five minutes. If you ever speak to Miss Doyle again, or if you attempt to threaten her career in this city... I will personally ensure you spend the rest of your life in a federal penitentiary. Do you understand me?"
"Yes, sir," Vance sobbed quietly, nodding hysterically. "Yes, Mr. Kane."
Matteo turned his back on the broken manager as if he no longer existed. He walked over to Maggie, looking down at her pale, beautiful face with an expression of profound, quiet respect.
"Pack your bag, Maggie," Matteo said softly, his gravelly voice warming completely.
Maggie blinked, still processing the absolute destruction of her corporate bully in less than three minutes. "Pack my bag?"
"You no longer work for this firm," Matteo declared smoothly. "I am hiring you as the Chief Fraud Auditor for Kane Logistics. You will have your own office, five times your current salary, and a staff that actually listens to your instructions."
Maggie stared at him, caught between sheer disbelief and an irresistible urge to laugh. "You can't just hire me on the spot!"
"I am a man of patterns, Maggie," Matteo murmured, reaching out to gently touch the sleeve of her coat. "And the pattern shows that you belong by my side."

Maggie looked at Vance cowering by the cubicle, then back at the broad, protective man standing before her. She slowly smiled, picking up her leather purse.
"Lead the way, Mr. Kane."
