Chapter 6 - Occupying SpaceOne year later.

The grand ballroom of the Wexler Grand Hotel was once again illuminated by hundreds of crystal chandeliers, filled with Chicago’s elite, expensive gowns, and flowing champagne for the annual children's literacy gala.

Table 14 sat near the center of the room.

Tonight, however, the table was not empty.

Seated around the white linen were Priya Carson, Levi, Marcus the attorney, and several high-ranking executives from Kane Logistics, laughing and enjoying high-end wine.

At Seat 18 sat Matteo Kane.

He wore a tailored black tuxedo, looking as striking and lethal as ever, but his cold gray eyes no longer held the dark, isolated shadow of a man who sat alone. He was smiling, listening intently to Priya tell a hilarious story about their college years.

Beside him, at Seat 17, sat Maggie Doyle—now Maggie Kane.

She was stunning. She wore a spectacular, floor-length deep-emerald silk gown designed by an elite Italian house, her dark hair falling in soft waves over her shoulders. A gorgeous, flawless pear-cut diamond ring sparkled on her left hand, catching the chandelier light with every movement.

She was no longer a woman trained to take up less space. She occupied her space with radiant, unshakeable confidence, her presence commanding as much respect and admiration as her husband's.

A server walked up to their table, carefully placing two fresh glasses of high-end vintage champagne beside their plates.

Matteo picked up his glass, turning his body to look directly at his wife.

Maggie turned to meet his gaze, her hazel eyes warm and bright with eternal love.

"What are you thinking about, Mr. Kane?" Maggie asked softly, leaning her shoulder against his broad frame.

Matteo reached out under the table, his broad, warm hand taking hers and resting it over his knee, their fingers intertwining effortlessly.

"I am thinking about a gold place card," Matteo murmured, his low baritone vibrating with deep affection. "And a very foolish friend who dared a brave woman to sit beside a monster."

Maggie laughed—a rich, loud, beautiful sound that echoed clearly through the surrounding ballroom, completely unbothered by who heard it.

"She wasn't foolish," Maggie corrected, raising her champagne glass to touch his. "She was just the delivery system for my destiny."

Matteo smiled—a full, breathtaking smile that lit up his handsome face—and clinked his glass against hers.

"To taking up space," Matteo whispered softly, his gray eyes shining with fierce devotion.

"To taking up space," Maggie agreed warmly.

And there, in the very ballroom where a reckless dare had begun, the former insurance investigator and the feared crime boss toasted to a future filled with unshakeable love, absolute equality, and a life lived brilliantly in the light.
