Chapter 4 - THE ARMORED ARCHIVESThe black SUV sped through the deserted streets of lower Manhattan, bypassing the bright lights of Times Square and heading south toward the industrial labyrinth of the waterfront docks.

Ruby sat in the passenger seat, watching the dark, rain-slicked pavement blur past. Milo was back home in Astoria, but his presence still lingered between them, a golden thread connecting their two disparate worlds.

"Where are we going?" Ruby asked, as the car passed through a heavy iron security gate guarded by armed men who saluted smartly as Dante’s vehicle rolled through.

"To the source," Dante replied, keeping his eyes on the road. "If you're going to understand the war Marcus Vance and his backers are waging against me, you need to see what's actually inside those shipping containers."

The SUV pulled up inside a massive, climate-controlled warehouse overlooking the East River. Inside, instead of stacks of illegal contraband or crates of smuggled weapons, the cavernous space was filled with rows of pristine, climate-controlled museum displays, archival racks, and hundreds of framed oil paintings, historical manuscripts, and rare artifacts.

Ruby stepped out of the car, her jaw dropping as she looked around. "Is this... a museum?"

"It's a recovery operation," Dante explained, walking beside her down an aisle of 19th-century European masterworks. "The Moretti syndicate and their associates make their money through looting cultural heritage sites in Eastern Europe and laundering the proceeds through shell corporations. For the past ten years, I’ve been using my shipping channels to intercept those shipments, buy back the stolen art, and return it to its rightful owners."

Ruby turned to look at him, her eyes wide with astonishment. "You're not just a syndicate boss... you're a modern-day Monuments Man."

"The old world calls me Don Marchetti," Dante said bitterly, stopping in front of a framed charcoal sketch of a golden retriever—an exact, haunting likeness of Argus. "The new world calls me a billionaire philanthropist. But the truth is, I’m just a man trying to make up for the blood my family spilled to build this empire."

He reached out, his fingers lightly brushing the glass of the portrait.

"When Marcus Vance threatened me tonight, it wasn't because of the docks," Dante continued, his voice dropping. "It was because this warehouse holds the master ledger—a complete digital record of every bank account, shell company, and corrupt politician funding the Moretti trafficking rings. They need that ledger back, or their entire empire collapses."

"And they think you're vulnerable," Ruby realized, stepping closer to him. "They think because you let people in—because you noticed a stray dog in an alley and a photographer in a ballroom—that you have weaknesses they can exploit."

Dante turned, looking down at her with a raw, unprotected vulnerability that he hid from the rest of the world. "I thought caring was a weakness, Ruby. I spent half my life believing that. But standing here with you... I realize it's the only thing keeping me human."

Before Ruby could answer, the overhead lights in the warehouse flickered violently and died, plunging the massive space into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
