Chapter 3 - The Threat Escalates

The safehouse was a converted brick warehouse overlooking the dark waters of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal. Inside, it was a tech-lover's dream—filled with server racks, glowing monitors, and soldering stations. It was Dr. Eleanor Simmons' personal playground, away from the bureaucratic eyes of the university.
Jasmine sat at a metal table, finally stripped of the heavy wedding dress. She was wearing a pair of Eleanor’s oversized gray sweatpants and a faded college t-shirt. The triplets were asleep on a makeshift bed of blankets in the corner, exhausted from the day's terror.
Eleanor handed Jasmine a steaming mug of black coffee. "Drink. You look like a ghost."
"I feel like one," Jasmine said, her fingers wrapping around the warm ceramic. "Eight months, Eleanor. I let that man into my home. I let him play board games with my children. He bought Zoe her first bike. He held Zayn when he had a nightmare. How could someone be that monstrous?"
"Richard Caldwell didn't build a multi-billion-dollar empire by being a nice guy," Tasha said, pacing back and forth near the window, keeping a watchful eye on the street below. "He’s a predator, Jasmine. He saw a brilliant, struggling woman with a revolutionary piece of tech, and he realized it was cheaper to marry you and steal it than to buy it fairly."
"It’s more than that," Eleanor said, stepping up to a large monitor. She had connected Zach's tablet to her local, air-gapped network. "I’ve been running a diagnostic on the files Zach managed to download before they fled. Jasmine, look at this."
On the screen, a series of legal documents appeared. Jasmine’s eyes scanned the text. Her breath caught in her throat.
"This is a patent filing," Jasmine said, her voice dropping. "For 'Caldwell Aegis.' But... this code... this is my architecture! He’s renamed my Taylor Shield!"
"Look at the date, Jasmine," Eleanor pointed out.
Jasmine leaned closer. The filing date was scheduled for tomorrow morning.
"He was going to file it the day after our wedding," Jasmine whispered, the realization hitting her like a physical blow. "While we were on the plane to Tahiti. Because once we were married, he would have had joint ownership of my intellectual property. He wouldn't even have had to steal it; it would have legally been half his, and as the CEO of Caldwell Enterprises, he had the infrastructure to claim sole execution rights."
"But that's not the worst of it," Eleanor said, her face grim. She clicked on another folder. This one was labeled 'Lakeshore Project: Phase 2.' "I’ve been investigating how Richard managed to get his hands on your early research notes from Lakeshore Institute. Jasmine, do you remember when your university server account was hacked last year? The incident that wiped out half your database?"
"Of course I do," Jasmine said, her chest tightening. "I almost quit the program. I lost three months of progress. If you hadn't helped me reconstruct the backup, I would have lost my scholarship."
"It wasn't a random hack," Eleanor said softly. "Look at the IP address that initiated the breach."
Eleanor highlighted a string of numbers on the screen. Jasmine stared at it. She didn't need a database to recognize it. It was the dedicated server line for Caldwell Enterprises.
"He hacked me a year ago," Jasmine breathed, her hands starting to shake. "Before he even met me. Before he 'accidentally' ran into me at that tech gala."
"Yes," Eleanor said. "He saw the potential of Taylor Shield when you published your abstract in the university journal. He tried to steal the source code via the hack, but your encryption was too strong. He could only get fragments. He realized the only way to get the complete, working core of the software was to get you."
"So he targeted me," Jasmine said, a cold horror washing over her. "The flowers. The chance meeting. The romance. The proposal. It was all a corporate heist."
Suddenly, the lights in the warehouse flickered.
Downstairs, the heavy metal security door rattled. The sound of a heavy vehicle idling echoed from the alleyway outside.
Tasha rushed to the window, her face turning pale. "Jasmine. Eleanor. We have a problem."
Jasmine ran to the window. Outside, parked in the shadows, were three black SUVs with tinted windows. Several men in tactical gear were exiting the vehicles. Among them, standing under the dim glow of a streetlamp, was Richard Caldwell.

He was no longer wearing his tuxedo jacket. His sleeves were rolled up, and his face was contorted in a mask of cold, calculating fury. He held a megaphone to his mouth.
"Jasmine!" Richard’s voice boomed through the quiet industrial district, amplified and chilling. "I know you're in there. And I know Eleanor is helping you. Let’s not make this difficult. You have something that belongs to me. Hand over the tablet, and we can settle this like reasonable adults. If you don't... well, I’ve already contacted the Chicago Police Department. I’ve reported my personal tablet stolen, along with proprietary corporate data. They are on their way. You have five minutes before I let them arrest you in front of your children."
