Chapter 1 - The Anatomy of a BetrayalThe morning sun filtered through the leaded glass windows of the estate, casting long, fractured shadows across the wine cellar where the search had begun. Dante Moretti did not sleep. While technicians combed through the wiring harness and security teams verified every digital access log, Dante stood at the head of the long oak table in his private study, his fingers resting lightly on the cold mahogany.

Eleven microphones. Eleven ears feeding every private conversation, whispered negotiation, and strategic move directly to an outside party.
The scope of the breach required insider access. The security architecture of the estate was notoriously rigorous—biometric locks, sweep frequencies, and encrypted communication protocols meant that whoever installed the transmitters needed not only physical access to the hidden service shafts but also detailed blueprints and intimate knowledge of the guard patrol rotations.
Marco Bellini stood by the door, his arms crossed, his face an impenetrable mask of quiet discipline. For thirty years, Marco had been Dante’s shadow. He knew every contact, every vulnerability, and every ledger entry.
"The installation points match the old contractor blueprints from the 1994 renovation," Marco said, his voice measured. "Only three people alive have those blueprints in their personal files: myself, the estate architect who passed away two years ago, and..." Marco paused, letting the silence hang. "And whoever handled the sub-contract maintenance logs."
Dante looked up, his slate-gray eyes fixing on Marco. "Who handled the maintenance logs for the past three years?"
"An outsourced firm out of Milwaukee," Marco replied. "Though the physical oversight of contractors was managed internally by administration."

Administration. That meant Clare Morgan’s department—or someone with clearance to sign off on maintenance windows.
Dante turned his gaze toward the window, watching the rain-slicked courtyard below where black SUVs remained parked in strict formation. "Bring Clare up here."
