Chapter 6 - A New FoundationTwo days later, the estate felt entirely different. The hidden service passages had been sealed with reinforced concrete and steel mesh, every electronic device in the mansion had been scrubbed and replaced, and the air of suspicion that had gripped the halls was replaced by a quiet, unshakeable resolution.

Julian Vance was gone—his digital footprint wiped clean, his life quietly redirected into a federal witness protection program far away from Chicago.
Back in the staff wing, Clare Morgan was folding fresh laundry when a soft knock sounded at her door.
She opened it to find Dante Moretti standing in the hallway. He wasn't wearing his usual charcoal jacket; his shirtsleeves were rolled up, and he looked less like an untouchable mafia boss and more like a man finally taking a moment to breathe.
"How are Lily and Nero settling in?" Dante asked, glancing down at the massive Cane Corso currently snoring loudly beside the kitchen island.
"They're doing great," Clare smiled softly. "Nero hasn't growled at a single wall since Tuesday."
Dante chuckled, leaning against the doorframe. "Good. Because I had the entire security architecture redesigned. No more blind spots. And certainly no more hidden listeners."
He reached into his pocket and handed Clare a small, heavy brass key on a leather fob.
"What is this?" she asked, looking down at it.
"The master override key for the administrative wing," Dante said evenly. "Effective immediately, your position is being elevated to Director of Estate Operations. With a salary commensurate with someone who actually runs this house—and protects the people inside it."
Clare looked from the key up to Dante’s eyes, seeing genuine respect and gratitude reflected there. For seven years, she had worked in the background, invisible, making sure everyone else’s world functioned smoothly while her own life remained sidelined.
She closed her fingers around the heavy brass key.
"Thank you, Mr. Moretti," Clare said, her voice steady and confident.

"Thank you, Clare," Dante replied, offering a rare, genuine smile. "And give an extra apple slice to Nero for me. He earned it."
As Dante walked down the corridor toward the grand staircase, Clare looked down at the key in her palm. The storm had passed, the shadows had been cleared away, and for the first time, she wasn't just keeping house—she was building a future that no one could ever take away from her.
