Chapter 5 - The Reckoning at Blackwell EstateThe fallout from Ethan’s return hit the Blackwell estate like a seismic shockwave.

By evening, Elizabeth’s luggage had been loaded into a town car by two grim-faced security guards, and she had departed for Manhattan without a single word of farewell. The massive, silent mansion felt different—lighter, cleaner, and purged of the toxic, suffocating atmosphere that had hung over it for weeks.

In the spacious, sunlit kitchen, Mrs. Brooks was humming softly as she stirred a pot of chicken soup, while Jaden sat at the island doing his algebra homework with a satisfied grin on his face.

Upstairs, in the master suite—not the small quarters off the kitchen, but the grand, vaulted master bedroom overlooking the Connecticut woods—Lily stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the sun set over the tree line.

The door opened softly, and Ethan walked in. He was carrying a small ceramic mug of tea and a plate of toast.

He set them on the bedside table and walked up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin softly on her shoulder.

"How are you feeling?" he asked, pressing a gentle kiss against her neck.

"Better," Lily whispered, leaning back into his warmth. "I feel like I've slept for three days straight."

"You basically did," Ethan smiled softly. "Mrs. Brooks tells me you haven't eaten a proper meal in weeks. I've given strict instructions to the kitchen that if anyone works you more than eight hours a day, they answer directly to me."

Lily turned around in his arms, looking up into his gray eyes. "You didn't have to banish your mother, Ethan. That's... that's a massive escalation."

"She crossed a line she should have never approached," Ethan said firmly, his hands resting on her hips. "She thought she could break you because she thought you were weak. She didn't realize that the woman I fell in love with is tougher than granite."

Lily smiled faintly, her fingers resting against the lapel of his shirt. "I wasn't trying to be tough. I was just trying to survive."

"You don't have to survive here anymore, Lily," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a deep, intense register. "You belong here. As my partner. As my equal. As the mistress of this house, if you'll have it."

Lily’s breath caught in her throat. The words hung in the air, golden and heavy with promise.

Before she could answer, a sharp knock sounded at the bedroom door.

"Come in," Ethan called out, frowning slightly.

The door opened to reveal Richard Blackwell. The older man looked somewhat hesitant, holding a thick, leather-bound ledger in his hands.

"Ethan. Lily," Richard nodded, stepping into the room. He looked at Lily with an expression of genuine respect. "I'm sorry to interrupt. But there's something you need to see, Ethan."

Ethan stepped away from Lily, walking over to his father. "What is it?"

"While your mother was packing her things, I went through her personal desk in the west wing," Richard said, laying the ledger on the coffee table. "I found her private records regarding the estate’s domestic payroll and restructuring."

Ethan flipped open the ledger. As his eyes scanned the pages, his jaw tightened until the muscles in his cheek bulged.

"What am I looking at?" Ethan asked, his voice dangerously low.

"Your mother wasn't just testing Lily's discipline," Richard said grimly. "She was systematically embezzling from the household contingency fund allocated for the staff bonuses, and she was trying to build a paper trail to pin the financial discrepancies on Lily's employment contract. If you had stayed in Europe another week, she would have had Lily arrested for corporate theft."

The silence in the room became absolute.

Lily stared at Richard in horror. "Arrested?"

"She wanted you gone, Lily," Richard said quietly. "By any means necessary."

Ethan closed the ledger so hard the wooden table shook. He looked up at his father, his eyes burning with cold fury.

"Make copies of these ledgers," Ethan said, his voice like freezing steel. "Send them to our corporate legal team, and forward them to the district attorney's office in Stamford. If Mother wants to play high-stakes games, she can play them with a federal judge."

Richard nodded slowly, a grim sense of satisfaction crossing his face. "Done. I'll handle it tonight."

As Richard walked out of the room, closing the door softly behind him, Ethan turned back to Lily. His expression was a mix of intense anger and deep, aching tenderness. He walked over, took her hands in his, and knelt down on one knee right there on the Persian rug.

Lily gasped, her hands trembling in his grasp. "Ethan... what are you doing?"

"I was going to wait until the end of the year," Ethan said, looking up at her with complete, unyielding devotion. "I was going to plan a trip to Paris, buy a ridiculous ring at Cartier, and make a grand speech in front of a fountain. But life doesn't wait for schedules, and neither do I."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, simple velvet box. He flipped it open, revealing a brilliant, vintage-cut diamond ring that caught the amber light of the setting sun.

"Lily Carter," Ethan said, his voice steady and clear. "You survived my mother’s war, you held your ground with more grace than anyone I have ever known, and you are the only home I have ever had. Will you marry me, and let me spend the rest of my life making sure no one ever hurts you again?"

Tears spilled over Lily’s eyelashes, but this time, they were tears of overwhelming, radiant relief.

May you like

She smiled, her voice thick with emotion.

"Yes, Ethan," she whispered, leaning down to pull him up into her arms. "Yes, a thousand times yes."
