Chapter 3: Blood and Bureaucracy

“Logan,” Richard said, his voice dangerously low. “Shut your mouth and get in my office. Now.”

“Dad, she humiliated me in front of—!”

“I said, now,” Richard snapped, finally letting a fraction of his true fury pierce his corporate veneer.

Logan scowled, shoving past Marcus and Titan with a muttered curse, storming down the corridor toward the private executive elevators. The girlfriend, realizing she had lost all leverage, scurried after him like a frightened mouse.

Richard stopped a few feet from Elena. He looked down at her soiled scrubs, the exhaustion etched into her face, and then toward the trauma bay where young Mason was finally resting peacefully on a heart monitor humming with a steady rhythm.

“Dr. Park,” Richard began, his tone shifting into a practiced, smooth diplomatic cadence. “I apologize for my son’s behavior. He has been… under a great deal of stress lately. I assure you, internal disciplinary steps will be taken.”

Elena didn’t flinch. She crossed her arms, her gaze boring straight through the director’s rehearsed diplomacy. “Internal steps, Dr. Weller? Like the last three times he drove his sports car through the staff parking barrier? Or the time he shoved a triage nurse and you classified it as a ‘miscommunication’?”

Richard’s jaw tightened. He wasn't used to subordinates speaking to him with such unfiltered defiance. “Let’s not be hasty, Doctor. Litigation and public scandals help no one. The hospital is preparing for a major board review next week. If we can keep this internal—”

“There is no ‘keeping this internal’,” Marcus interrupted, stepping forward so that he towered over the hospital director. He tapped the digital recorder still resting in his palm. “This file is already synced to a secure cloud server with a dead-man’s switch. If anything happens to Dr. Park’s employment status, her credentials, or her safety within the next forty-eight hours, this footage goes live to every major news outlet between Chicago and New York.”

Richard’s eyes darted to Marcus, taking in the quiet menace radiating from the former soldier. In the underworld of corporate and institutional politics, Richard knew the difference between bluffing professionals and men who had stared down real danger. Marcus Vance was not a man who bluffed.

“What do you want?” Richard asked flatly, dropping the corporate mask entirely.

“Three things,” Elena said, stepping closer. “First, a permanent, legally binding restraining order banning Logan Weller from setting foot on hospital grounds ever again. Second, a formal, written apology to the nursing staff he harassed tonight. And third…” She paused, letting a cold smile touch her lips. “A fifty-thousand-dollar grant deposited directly into the pediatric trauma equipment fund, signed off by the end of the week.”

Richard stared at her in disbelief. “You’re blackmailing me.”

“I’m billing you for damages,” Elena corrected smoothly. “Take it or let Marcus press send. You have until sunrise.”
