Chapter 3 - The Boardroom CoupAt 8:30 AM the following morning, the glass-and-steel skyscraper housing the headquarters of Sterling Financial was surrounded by news vans.

Word had leaked to the financial press late the previous night that Sterling Financial—the darling mid-sized investment firm of the district—was facing an abrupt, hostile equity restructuring.
Adrian Sterling stepped out of his black town car, wearing a sharp dark suit, though his eyes were bloodshot and his tie was slightly askew. He had not slept a single minute. Beside him, Chloe looked nervous, her stylish confidence melting away under the flashing cameras of reporters shouting questions from behind the police barricades.
"Mr. Sterling! Is it true Vance Capital is calling in your debt?"
"Mr. Sterling! Comments on the emergency injunction filed against your firm?"
"Adrian, move!" Greg, his attorney, grabbed Adrian’s arm, ushering him quickly into the private executive elevator.
Inside the elevator, Adrian smoothed his jacket, trying desperately to regain his composure. "It’s a bluff," Adrian muttered through gritted teeth, staring at his reflection in the polished steel doors. "Arthur Vance is trying to intimidate me into settling quietly. He thinks he can scare me out of my share of the business. But I run this company. The clients trust me."
"Adrian, shut up and listen to me," Greg whispered frantically as the elevator ascended to the twentieth floor. "Vance Capital owns the debt covenants. If those covenants are breached—and your public marital misconduct constitutes a reputational breach under Section 9 of the agreement—they can strip your voting power before noon today."
The elevator chimed softly.
The doors slid open to reveal the grand marble lobby of Sterling Financial's executive floor.
The atmosphere inside was charged with electric tension. Dozens of junior partners, analysts, and senior portfolio managers were gathered around the glass walls of the main board room, whispering urgently.
Adrian strode down the hallway, trying to project absolute authority. "Back to your desks, everyone! There is nothing to worry about! Normal operations continue!"
No one moved. They stared at him with expressions ranging from shock to pity.
Adrian pushed open the heavy frosted-glass doors of the main boardroom.
Sitting at the head of the twenty-foot mahogany conference table was not his chief financial officer.
Sitting at the head of the table was my father, Arthur Vance, flanked by three senior forensic accountants and Julian Thorne.
And sitting directly to Arthur’s right, looking breathtakingly radiant in a tailored emerald-green suit, her hair styled in soft, elegant waves, was me.
I looked healthier, sharper, and more powerful than Adrian had ever seen me. Behind me stood two private baby nurses holding double-wide stroller units containing my sleeping sons, safely out of view of the glass walls.
Adrian stopped dead in his tracks. His eyes widened, darting between me, my father, and the thick stacks of financial audits resting on the table.
"Eleanor...?" Adrian gasped, his voice cracking slightly. "What... what are you doing here? You had a C-section thirty-six hours ago!"
"Modern medicine is wonderful, Adrian," I said calmly, crossing my hands over the mahogany table. "Especially when you have access to the best physicians in the state. Please, take a seat. We have a business meeting to conduct."
Chloe stepped into the room behind Adrian, clutching her designer handbag like a shield. She glared at me, trying to muster her previous arrogance. "You have no right to be here! This is Adrian's company!"
My father didn't even look at her. He raised a single hand, and two private security guards immediately stepped inside from the doorway.
"Escort the non-essential civilian out of this facility," Arthur ordered in a voice like granite.
"Wait! You can't touch her!" Adrian shouted.
"She is not a shareholder, an attorney, or an officer of this firm," Julian Thorne stated smoothly, sliding a document across the table. "She is currently trespassing on property owned by Vance Commercial Holdings. Escort her out."
Before Chloe could scream, the security guards firmly grabbed her arms and guided her out of the boardroom, shutting the heavy glass doors behind them.
"Now," I said, leaning back in my leather chair, locking my eyes with Adrian’s horrified gaze. "Let’s talk about Sterling Financial."
"Eleanor, listen to me," Adrian stammered, stepping toward the table, his hands trembling. "This... this is business! You can't destroy what we built because you're angry about our personal life!"
"What we built?" I let out a soft, melodic laugh that chilled him to the bone. "Adrian... who wrote the algorithmic trading strategies for your flagship fund in 2022? Who structured the offshore tax shelters that saved you four million dollars in capital gains last year? I did. While sitting at home, pregnant, watching you take the applause on CNBC."
"I am the CEO!" Adrian yelled, slamming his hands onto the table. "I hold the controlling operational equity!"
Julian Thorne cleared his throat, pulling a golden pen from his pocket. "Correction, Mr. Sterling. You held thirty-two percent of non-voting common stock. Vance Capital LLC held sixty-eight percent of convertible preferred voting debt."
Julian tapped his tablet screen. "At 8:00 AM this morning, Vance Capital exercised its contractual option to convert that debt into 100% of voting equity, citing your severe personal and legal liabilities which have threatened the firm's capital stability."
Adrian’s breath hitched. He turned wildly to his attorney. "Greg! Tell me this isn't legal!"
May you like
Greg looked down at the floor, refusing to meet Adrian’s eyes. "It's in the original articles of incorporation, Adrian. You signed it six years ago."
"As of 8:15 AM today," I continued, my voice smooth as silk, "the Board of Directors met in an emergency session. By a unanimous vote of sixty-eight percent to zero... you have been terminated as Chief Executive Officer of Sterling Financial, effective immediately."
