Chapter 5 - The Final Courtroom ShowdownThree months later.

The Grand Jury Courtroom of the State Supreme Court was packed to maximum capacity.

Reporters from every major financial and news network sat in the gallery rows, their laptops open and fingers poised above keyboards.

On the left side of the aisle sat Adrian Sterling.

In ninety days, he had aged ten years. His once-impeccable designer suits were gone, replaced by an ill-fitting navy suit purchased off the rack. His hair was messy, his shoulders hunched, and his defense attorney—a public defender assigned after his private legal team withdrew due to non-payment—looked hopelessly overwhelmed by the mountain of evidence sitting on his desk.

On the right side sat my legal team.

I wore a cream-colored silk blouse and a dark blue tailored skirt, sitting alongside Julian Thorne and my father. I looked serene, healthy, and completely in control.

Judge Helen Vance—a formidable woman with forty years on the bench—struck her gavel sharply against the wooden block.

BANG!

"This court is now in session," Judge Vance announced, her sharp eyes scanning the room over her reading glasses. "We are here to deliver the final ruling on Case #8804: Vance-Sterling v. Sterling, concerning marital asset division, child custody, spousal support, and civil restitution."

Adrian’s attorney stood up slowly, clearing his throat. "Your Honor... my client respectfully requests that the court consider his current financial hardship. Mr. Sterling has lost his position at his firm and is currently facing civil litigation. We request shared joint physical custody of his three sons and access to a temporary spousal maintenance stipend from the Vance Family Trust assets to allow him to secure adequate housing."

I almost laughed out loud. Adrian was still trying to bleed my family’s trust.

Julian Thorne rose to his feet smoothly, adjusting his jacket. "Your Honor, if I may."

"Go ahead, Mr. Thorne," the Judge permitted.

"The respondent, Mr. Sterling, claims he desires joint custody out of parental affection," Julian said, his voice carrying effortlessly across the courtroom. "However, we submit into evidence Exhibit D: the security camera footage and audio recording from St. Jude’s Hospital, taken less than eighteen hours after Mrs. Vance-Sterling underwent a major surgical procedure to deliver triplets."

Julian pressed a button on his podium.

The large flat-screen monitors mounted on the courtroom walls lit up.

The video played in crystal-clear high definition.

The entire gallery watched as Adrian walked into my hospital room alongside Chloe Montgomery, laughing and mocking my physical appearance. They heard his cold, cruel words loud and clear through the room’s speakers:

"Don't use the babies to manipulate me... Sign the papers... My attorneys will bury you."

Gasps erupted from the gallery. Two female jurors on the panel looked at Adrian with unadulterated disgust. Adrian pulled his head down, pressing his forehead into his hands on the defense table.

"Furthermore," Julian continued, dropping a second stack of documents onto the clerk's desk, "the financial audit confirms Mr. Sterling attempted to use his proposed sole custody arrangement as a mechanical leverage tool to gain administrative access to the fifteen-million-dollar trust allocated solely for the children's health and education."

Judge Vance lowered her glasses, staring down at Adrian with an expression of pure, unadulterated ice.

"Mr. Sterling," Judge Vance said, her voice dropping into a register that commanded absolute silence. "In my thirty-five years on this bench, I have rarely witnessed a display of such callous, calculated cruelty toward a mother and her newborn children."

She picked up her pen, signing the final decree with sharp, decisive strokes.

"It is the order of this court that Mrs. Eleanor Vance-Sterling is granted sole legal and sole physical custody of the minor children: Leo, Ethan, and Noah Vance," the Judge declared, her gavel resting in her hand. "The respondent, Adrian Sterling, is granted zero visitation rights until he completes a court-mandated two-year psychological evaluation and demonstrates full financial stability."

BANG!

"Furthermore," Judge Vance continued, "all marital assets, including the luxury penthouse and personal liquid holdings, are hereby awarded entirely to the petitioner as partial civil restitution for fraudulent asset diversion. Mr. Sterling is ordered to pay $1.2 million in back spousal support and legal fees."

BANG!

"Your Honor!" Adrian cried out, jumping up from his chair in sheer desperation. "I don't have $1.2 million! I have nothing! I'm broke!"

As his voice echoed off the wood-paneled walls, the heavy double doors at the back of the courtroom swung open.

Four uniformed Federal Marshals walked down the center aisle, their badges gleaming under the courtroom lights.

The lead Marshal stepped up to the defense table, pulling a set of steel handcuffs from his belt.

"Adrian Sterling?" the Marshal asked sternly.

"Yes...?" Adrian stammered, backing away against the railing.

"You are under arrest pursuant to a federal warrant issued by the United States District Court for the Eastern District," the Marshal announced clearly. "You are charged with twelve counts of wire fraud, securities embezzlement, and federal tax evasion."

The gallery burst into a frenzy of murmurs and camera flashes.

The Marshals grabbed Adrian’s arms, snapping the steel cuffs around his wrists behind his back.

As they turned him around to lead him out of the courtroom, Adrian looked at me. His eyes were wide, filled with tears, begging for a single shred of mercy.

I sat beside my father, my head held high, looking at him with neither hatred nor anger—only complete, peaceful indifference.

He had become a ghost in my life, and ghosts could no longer hurt me.
